45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The death of admired educator Alberto Byington Sr.
67 on July 21, 2012, at the age of 77, brought a great loss to residents
78 of South Texas; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Falfurrias on April 6, 1935, Alberto
910 Byington was the son of Alfredo Byington Sr. and Annabel Cruz
1011 Byington; he graduated from Falfurrias High School and served his
1112 country in the United States Air Force before going on to complete
1213 his bachelor's and master's degrees at Texas A&I University; and
1314 WHEREAS, Mr. Byington's career in education spanned nearly a
14- half-century; he began teaching in the Brooks County Independent
15- School District in Falfurrias in 1961, and two years later, he
16- became a principal in Encino; he then served as director of federal
17- programs and assistant superintendent, and in 1973, he began a
18- noteworthy 23-year tenure as superintendent; he then served as
19- interim superintendent in Mathis, San Diego, and Ben Bolt-Palito
15+ half-century; he began teaching in Falfurrias in 1961, and two
16+ years later, he became a principal in Encino; returning to the
17+ Brooks County Independent School District, he served as director of
18+ federal programs and assistant superintendent, and in 1973, he
19+ began a noteworthy 23-year tenure as superintendent; he then served

2021 Blanco, where a six-month appointment turned into a seven-year
2122 tenure; in addition, he was a Texas Education Agency Monitor for
2223 Driscoll ISD; he was asked to return to Brooks County as
2324 superintendent and served until 2010, when he retired from the
2425 district for a second time; and
2526 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to his calling, Mr. Byington was a
2627 kind mentor to countless people, and he served in numerous
2728 leadership roles; he was chair of the University Interscholastic
2829 League Waiver Review Board and a member of the UIL State Executive
2930 Committee and the Region XIV Music Executive Committee, and his
3031 professional affiliations included the Texas State Teachers
3132 Association and Texas Association of School Administrators; named
3233 Educator of the Month by Texas School Business magazine, he also
3334 received the prestigious Golden Molcajete Award from the Mexican
3435 American School Board Members Association and the Tejano Service
3536 Award, which recognized him as the longest-serving Hispanic
3637 superintendent in the state; and
3738 WHEREAS, This civic-minded Texan served the wider community
3839 as a member of the Brooks County Chamber of Commerce, the Juvenile
3940 Board, and the board of the Kingsville Area Educators Federal
4041 Credit Union; moreover, he was a valued member of Sacred Heart
4142 Catholic Church, where he served as lector; above all, he was a
4243 devoted family man; he shared a fulfilling relationship with his
4344 wife, Virginia Susana Byington, and he was the proud father of
4445 Alberto, Kristina, and Ricardo; and
4546 WHEREAS, Alberto Byington was dedicated to providing the
4647 children of rural South Texas with a strong foundation on which to
4748 build, and his outstanding contributions will remain a source of
4849 inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him; now,
4950 therefore, be it
5051 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5152 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Alberto Byington
5253 Sr. and extend sincere condolences to his loved ones; and, be it
5354 further
5455 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5556 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5657 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alberto
5758 Byington Sr.
