8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low in |

9 | 10 | | Savannah, Georgia, in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA began forming |

10 | 11 | | troops in Texas just five years later; membership in the Lone Star |
---|
11 | 12 | | State now exceeds 160,000, and more than 55,000 adult volunteers |

12 | 13 | | provide guidance; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Girl Scouts today engage in a variety of activities |
---|
14 | 15 | | that help them to articulate and act on their values, develop |
---|
15 | 16 | | skills, and discover the world around them; they connect with |

16 | 17 | | others in a multicultural environment, and they prepare to take on |
---|
17 | 18 | | leadership roles, thereby furthering the organization's tradition |

18 | 19 | | of promoting greater gender balance in society; and |

19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Financial literacy has long been a high priority, |

20 | 21 | | and the famous cookie program teaches Girl Scouts important aspects |

21 | 22 | | of business, including such modern techniques as e-marketing and |

22 | 23 | | digital money management; encouraging greater involvement by women |
---|
23 | 24 | | in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the |
---|
24 | 25 | | customized Girl Scout STEM program enhances critical thinking, |
---|
25 | 26 | | problem-solving, and collaboration, and participants have competed |
---|
26 | 27 | | in national robotics contests; and |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Always an integral component of the Girl Scout |

28 | 29 | | experience, outdoor activities allow girls to try new things and |

29 | 30 | | test their limits, gaining confidence and acquiring skills in a |

30 | 31 | | safe, supportive, all-female environment; moreover, the Girl Scout |

31 | 32 | | Research Institute is contributing to the well-being of youngsters |

32 | 33 | | by releasing state-by-state assessment data that can enable |

33 | 34 | | communities to better allocate resources to promote the health, |
---|
34 | 35 | | happiness, and educational attainment of girls; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of more than a century, Girl Scouts |

36 | 37 | | of the USA has nurtured generations of strong, independent female |

37 | 38 | | leaders, and Texas Girl Scouts may indeed take pride in the rich |

38 | 39 | | heritage of their organization; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 103rd anniversary of Girl Scouts |

41 | 42 | | of the USA and extend to all Texas Girl Scouts and their leaders |
