45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts across Texas are celebrating the 103rd
67 anniversary of the founding of their organization on March 12,
78 2015; and
89 WHEREAS, Established by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low in
910 Savannah, Georgia, in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA began forming
1011 troops in Texas just five years later; membership in the Lone Star
1112 State now exceeds 160,000, and more than 55,000 adult volunteers
1213 provide guidance; and
1314 WHEREAS, Girl Scouts today engage in a variety of activities
1415 that help them to articulate and act on their values, develop
1516 skills, and discover the world around them; they connect with
1617 others in a multicultural environment, and they prepare to take on
1718 leadership roles, thereby furthering the organization's tradition
1819 of promoting greater gender balance in society; and
1920 WHEREAS, Financial literacy has long been a high priority,
2021 and the famous cookie program teaches Girl Scouts important aspects
2122 of business, including such modern techniques as e-marketing and
2223 digital money management; encouraging greater involvement by women
2324 in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the
2425 customized Girl Scout STEM program enhances critical thinking,
2526 problem-solving, and collaboration, and participants have competed
2627 in national robotics contests; and
2728 WHEREAS, Always an integral component of the Girl Scout
2829 experience, outdoor activities allow girls to try new things and
2930 test their limits, gaining confidence and acquiring skills in a
3031 safe, supportive, all-female environment; moreover, the Girl Scout
3132 Research Institute is contributing to the well-being of youngsters
3233 by releasing state-by-state assessment data that can enable
3334 communities to better allocate resources to promote the health,
3435 happiness, and educational attainment of girls; and
3536 WHEREAS, Over the course of more than a century, Girl Scouts
3637 of the USA has nurtured generations of strong, independent female
3738 leaders, and Texas Girl Scouts may indeed take pride in the rich
3839 heritage of their organization; now, therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby commemorate the 103rd anniversary of Girl Scouts
4142 of the USA and extend to all Texas Girl Scouts and their leaders
4243 sincere best wishes for the future.
