45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Members of the Garland Chamber of Commerce are
67 visiting the State Capitol, and this occasion provides a welcome
78 opportunity to pay tribute to this outstanding community
89 organization and the city it serves; and
910 WHEREAS, For more than 120 years, the Garland chamber has
1011 worked to ensure the economic vitality of Garland; when the city
1112 needed to broaden its economic base beyond agriculture in the
1213 mid-20th century, the chamber recruited a variety of companies that
1314 have since expanded to become such world-famous enterprises as
1415 General Dynamics Corporation, Raytheon Company, Hatco Corporation,
1516 and Kraft Foods Group, Inc., and KARLEE and Garrett Metal
1617 Detectors, which grew from shops in garages to internationally
1718 renowned industry leaders, and are among the nearly 400
1819 manufacturing enterprises located in Garland today; and
1920 WHEREAS, The Garland chamber is the creator of a variety of
2021 programs to support small businesses, manufacturing companies,
2122 retail firms, and the local education system, acting on the
2223 principle that success in each of these areas depends on success in
2324 all of them; the chamber is the founder of the Garland Education
2425 Foundation and the first chamber of commerce to host an office of
2526 the Small Business Development Center, and it has actively
2627 participated in the development of the Dallas County Manufacturers'
2728 Association, the Women's Business E-nitiative, and Leadership
2829 Garland; and
2930 WHEREAS, Garland has become the fifth largest city in the
3031 Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and one of the fastest growing regions
3132 in the nation, home to nearly 235,000 residents and rated among the
3233 top 100 best places in the country in which to live by CNN and Money
3334 magazine in 2008; the chamber is an essential member of the Garland
3435 Economic Development Partnership, which has been responsible for
3536 the creation and retention of more than 18,000 jobs and a $1.8
3637 billion tax base in the city; and
3738 WHEREAS, Operating under the acronym PRIDE, for Passion,
3839 Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence, the Garland
3940 Chamber of Commerce has been a dynamic and inspiring "connecting
4041 source" in its community, and it is indeed deserving of recognition
4142 for the vital role it has played in this Lone Star success story;
4243 now, therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby recognize Garland Chamber of Commerce Day at the
4546 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
4647 wishes for a meaningful and memorable visit to Austin.
