| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Mission are gathering in Austin on |

| 6 | 7 | | March 5, 2015, to celebrate Mission Day at the State Capitol; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The city of Mission was founded in 1908, the year the |

| 8 | 9 | | Missouri Pacific Railroad established a station in the area, and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the city was named for La Lomita Mission, which was located nearby; |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | since then, Mission has grown to be a thriving city with a |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | population of more than 81,000 people; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The first citrus trees in the Rio Grande Valley were |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | planted in the Mission area; today, the citrus industry is a |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | multimillion-dollar business and is celebrated each year at the |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Texas Citrus Fiesta; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mission was immortalized in Larry McMurtry's novel |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | and television miniseries, Lonesome Dove, and notable residents |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | have included the late United States senator and treasury secretary |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Lloyd Bentsen and former United States congressman Kika de la |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Garza; moreover, Mission was the childhood home of Tom Landry and a |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | second home to governor Allan Shivers and to three-time |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan; and |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Recreational opportunities are abundant in Mission, |

| 24 | 25 | | with such attractions as the National Butterfly Center, the World |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Birding Center, Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park, and the |

| 26 | 27 | | 10-mile Mission Hike and Bike Trail; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mission Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity |

| 28 | 29 | | to honor the border city's heritage and its many charms, which are |

| 29 | 30 | | enjoyed by residents and vacationers alike; now, therefore, be it |
