| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Breastfeeding Coalition are |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to improving breastfeeding rates, the |

| 8 | 9 | | coalition works to promote a public environment that accepts and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | supports mothers in this healthy practice; medical authorities such |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the United States Centers for |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Disease Control and Prevention all strongly recommend |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | breastfeeding, and the U.S. surgeon general has issued a call to |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | action in this regard; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, According to the CDC, breastfeeding is one of the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | most effective measures a mother can take to protect the health of |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | her infant; breastfeeding protects babies from a wide range of |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | infections and illnesses, and breastfed babies are less likely to |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | develop asthma; in addition, it reduces the risk of sudden infant |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | death syndrome, and children who are breastfed for six months are |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | less likely to become obese; mothers who breastfeed also have a |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Cost-benefit analyses performed by private |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | researchers and by the federal government have found that increases |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | in breastfeeding reduce costs to the nation's health care system |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | for both acute and chronic illnesses; Texas, with its high rates of |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | obesity and diabetes, stands to benefit significantly by |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | encouraging more mothers to breastfeed; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Despite the vital advantages conferred by |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | breastfeeding, mothers do not always receive the up-to-date |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | instructions they need, and some current hospital practices make it |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | more difficult to establish successful breastfeeding; mothers may |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | also confront a lack of accommodations at work and in public places; |
|---|

| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Breastfeeding Coalition is making a |

| 36 | 37 | | positive difference in the lives of women and children through its |

| 37 | 38 | | efforts to educate the public and improve support for |
