No. 799 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Joe Filoteo Jr. has greatly benefited his community through his service as a coach and athletic director and in his work as the head of the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department; and WHEREAS, A member of the Waco High School Class of 1973, Mr. Filoteo went on to graduate with bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Baylor University; he began his coaching career at Connally Junior High School in Elm Mott and later worked at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg before being named head basketball coach at Edinburg High School in 1983; and WHEREAS, Over the course of two and a half decades at Edinburg High, Mr. Filoteo achieved the most wins in school history, compiling a total of 553 victories, and he led the Bobcats to three quarterfinal, three area, and eight district championships; in addition, he was named the All-Area and All-Valley Coach of the Year on five occasions, and in 2008 he was selected as a State All-Star Coach by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and was inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame; that same year, he was promoted to athletic director of the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District, and he ably served in that capacity for seven years, earning the title of Athletic Director of the Year from the City of Palms Coaching Clinic in 2011; and WHEREAS, Mr. Filoteo began another notable chapter in his career in 2014, when he was appointed the director of the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department; in that role, he has overseen the department's sports programs, making valuable contributions to the city's quality of life; and WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Filoteo is blessed with the love and support of his wife, Mary Lou Filoteo, and his two children, Christopher Filoteo and Sabrina Salinas; and WHEREAS, Through his commitment to public service and youth athletics, Joe Filoteo has made a positive difference in the lives of many people in the Edinburg area, and his efforts have earned him the lasting respect and admiration of his fellow residents; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commend Joe Filoteo Jr. for his outstanding achievements as a coach and athletic director and for his dedicated service with the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Filoteo as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
