5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Joe Filoteo Jr. has greatly benefited his community |

6 | 7 | | through his service as a coach and athletic director and in his work |

7 | 8 | | as the head of the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A member of the Waco High School Class of 1973, |

9 | 10 | | Mr. Filoteo went on to graduate with bachelor's and master's |

10 | 11 | | degrees in education from Baylor University; he began his coaching |
---|
11 | 12 | | career at Connally Junior High School in Elm Mott and later worked |
---|
12 | 13 | | at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg before being named |
---|
13 | 14 | | head basketball coach at Edinburg High School in 1983; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of two and a half decades at Edinburg |

15 | 16 | | High, Mr. Filoteo achieved the most wins in school history, |

16 | 17 | | compiling a total of 553 victories, and he led the Bobcats to three |

17 | 18 | | quarterfinal, three area, and eight district championships; in |

18 | 19 | | addition, he was named the All-Area and All-Valley Coach of the Year |

19 | 20 | | on five occasions, and in 2008 he was selected as a State All-Star |

20 | 21 | | Coach by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and was |

21 | 22 | | inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame; that same |

22 | 23 | | year, he was promoted to athletic director of the Edinburg |

23 | 24 | | Consolidated Independent School District, and he ably served in |

24 | 25 | | that capacity for seven years, earning the title of Athletic |

25 | 26 | | Director of the Year from the City of Palms Coaching Clinic in 2011; |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Filoteo began another notable chapter in his |

28 | 29 | | career in 2014, when he was appointed the director of the Edinburg |

29 | 30 | | Parks and Recreation Department; in that role, he has overseen the |

30 | 31 | | department's sports programs, making valuable contributions to the |
---|
31 | 32 | | city's quality of life; and |

32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Filoteo is blessed with |

33 | 34 | | the love and support of his wife, Mary Lou Filoteo, and his two |
---|
34 | 35 | | children, Christopher Filoteo and Sabrina Salinas; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Through his commitment to public service and youth |

36 | 37 | | athletics, Joe Filoteo has made a positive difference in the lives |

37 | 38 | | of many people in the Edinburg area, and his efforts have earned him |

38 | 39 | | the lasting respect and admiration of his fellow residents; now, |
