45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Joe Filoteo Jr. has greatly benefited his community
67 through his service as a coach and athletic director and in his work
78 as the head of the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department; and
89 WHEREAS, A member of the Waco High School Class of 1973,
910 Mr. Filoteo went on to graduate with bachelor's and master's
1011 degrees in education from Baylor University; he began his coaching
1112 career at Connally Junior High School in Elm Mott and later worked
1213 at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg before being named
1314 head basketball coach at Edinburg High School in 1983; and
1415 WHEREAS, Over the course of two and a half decades at Edinburg
1516 High, Mr. Filoteo achieved the most wins in school history,
1617 compiling a total of 553 victories, and he led the Bobcats to three
1718 quarterfinal, three area, and eight district championships; in
1819 addition, he was named the All-Area and All-Valley Coach of the Year
1920 on five occasions, and in 2008 he was selected as a State All-Star
2021 Coach by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and was
2122 inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame; that same
2223 year, he was promoted to athletic director of the Edinburg
2324 Consolidated Independent School District, and he ably served in
2425 that capacity for seven years, earning the title of Athletic
2526 Director of the Year from the City of Palms Coaching Clinic in 2011;
2627 and
2728 WHEREAS, Mr. Filoteo began another notable chapter in his
2829 career in 2014, when he was appointed the director of the Edinburg
2930 Parks and Recreation Department; in that role, he has overseen the
3031 department's sports programs, making valuable contributions to the
3132 city's quality of life; and
3233 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Filoteo is blessed with
3334 the love and support of his wife, Mary Lou Filoteo, and his two
3435 children, Christopher Filoteo and Sabrina Salinas; and
3536 WHEREAS, Through his commitment to public service and youth
3637 athletics, Joe Filoteo has made a positive difference in the lives
3738 of many people in the Edinburg area, and his efforts have earned him
3839 the lasting respect and admiration of his fellow residents; now,
3940 therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby commend Joe Filoteo Jr. for his outstanding
4243 achievements as a coach and athletic director and for his dedicated
4344 service with the Edinburg Parks and Recreation Department and
4445 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
4546 further
4647 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4748 prepared for Mr. Filoteo as an expression of high regard by the
4849 Texas House of Representatives.
