| 6 | 7 | | close when Janet Palmquist Patterson of Dallas passed away on |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on May 21, 1943, the former Janet Palmquist |

| 9 | 10 | | attended high school in Sleepy Hollow, New York, before continuing |

| 10 | 11 | | her education at Beloit College, where she lettered in swimming, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska in |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | 1965; she married her high school sweetheart, Jay Patterson, with |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | whom she went on to enjoy five decades of marriage; she worked as a |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | teacher in Dallas to support him as he studied law, and he |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | ultimately became a state district judge; she subsequently devoted |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | herself full-time to her home and family, which grew to include a |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | daughter, Betsy, and a son, Jamie; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Patterson later worked as a political |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | consultant, and she was a driving force in a multitude of Republican |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | organizations; a longtime member of the Texas Federation of |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Republican Women, she held numerous leadership positions within the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | organization, and during her term as president, she came up with the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | idea of wearing red jackets when members visited the State Capitol |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | for their legislative day; other groups that benefited from her |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | involvement were the Lake Highlands and the Town East Republican |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Women's Clubs and the Dallas County Council of Republican Women, |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | and she served as a regional chair and delegate to the Dallas County |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Republican Party; and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Jan Patterson's public-spiritedness also led her to |

| 30 | 31 | | volunteer her time with the City of Dallas Plan Commission, the City |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | of Dallas Health and Human Services Commission, and the Lake |

| 32 | 33 | | Highlands Women's League; her leadership was acknowledged at the |

| 33 | 34 | | state level with back-to-back appointments by Governors Bill |

| 34 | 35 | | Clements and George W. Bush to the Texas Board on Aging, which she |

| 35 | 36 | | also served as chair; additionally, she accepted gubernatorial |

| 36 | 37 | | appointments to serve as a Texas delegate to the White House |

| 37 | 38 | | Conference on Families in 1980 and the White House Conference on |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | Aging in 1995; and |

| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Even as she battled illness near the end of her life, |

| 40 | 41 | | Mrs. Patterson never lost her passion for helping others; she |

| 41 | 42 | | belonged to the Order of the Daughters of the King at St. John's |

| 42 | 43 | | Episcopal Church, through which she comforted and ministered to |

| 43 | 44 | | other congregants and neighbors in Lake Highlands; known for her |

| 44 | 45 | | warm heart, abiding faith, and ever-present smile, she freely |

| 45 | 46 | | expressed affection for her family and friends that was returned |

| 46 | 47 | | fully in kind, and she particularly cherished her role as "nanny" to |

| 47 | 48 | | her precious grandchildren; and |

| 48 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Although the passing of Jan Patterson brings great |

| 49 | 50 | | sorrow, her graceful and generous spirit will remain a lasting |
