| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Women play an essential part in the armed forces of |

| 7 | 8 | | March 2015 as the Texas Veterans Commission joins with individuals |

| 8 | 9 | | across the state to observe Women Veterans Month; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The long tradition of women serving in our country's |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | military dates back to the American Revolution, when they acted as |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | nurses, cooks, and saboteurs; their important contributions |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | continued in the centuries that followed and included assignments |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | as military nurses in fixed-facility hospitals in World Wars I and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | II and as medical staff in field combat hospitals during the Korean |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | and Vietnam Wars; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Today, women constitute approximately 15 percent of |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | the armed forces, performing a range of vital duties, and the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Veterans Administration estimates that by 2020 women will make up |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | 10 percent of all former military personnel living in the United |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | States; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Texas is home to the largest population of women |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | veterans in the United States, and the Women Veterans Initiative |

| 23 | 24 | | sponsored by the Texas Veterans Commission helps educate these |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | individuals about federal and state support available to them; the |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | initiative also coordinates supplemental aid with local government |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | and community organizations, and it works to raise awareness of the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | outstanding work performed by women in the military; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | women who have helped defend our nation, and thanks to the efforts |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | of the Women Veterans Initiative, these brave and patriotic |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | individuals are gaining improved access to the assistance and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | recognition they so richly deserve; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize March 2015 as Women Veterans Month in |

| 35 | 36 | | the State of Texas and commend the work of the Texas Veterans |
