| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Alana Danielle Smith of Houston demonstrated |

| 6 | 7 | | noteworthy courage and presence of mind when she intervened to foil |

| 7 | 8 | | a burglary attempt; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, On June 20, 2014, Alana Smith was driving her |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | father, Dr. Kevin Smith, home from the airport, when the two |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | encountered an unfamiliar truck in his driveway; the occupants sped |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | away, suggesting that they had burglarized the house; without |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | hesitation, Ms. Smith made the decision to give chase in order to |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | track the suspects' whereabouts for the police; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, After Ms. Smith followed the vehicle for close to |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | half an hour through neighborhoods and freeways, the suspects |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | suddenly retaliated by shifting their truck into reverse and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | ramming the car driven by Ms. Smith; the situation went on to |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | escalate even further, as the suspects spun their truck around and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | struck her vehicle head-on with a force of approximately 60 miles |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | per hour; anticipating the impact, Ms. Smith was able to prevent |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | her car from rolling over as it landed safely in a nearby ditch, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | while the suspects' truck also lost control and crashed into the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | same ditch 20 yards away; one suspect fled on foot, and police soon |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | arrived and apprehended the two who remained; the Smiths later |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | recovered their stolen possessions; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The strong sense of justice that Ms. Smith exhibited |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | that day is also evident in her choice to pursue her studies at |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | South Texas College of Law, where she is currently a first-year law |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | student; Dr. Smith, a Houston-based physician and plastic surgeon, |

| 30 | 31 | | takes great pride in his daughter, whose natural response to an |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | emergency was to stand up for what she believes is right; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Alana Smith's brave actions helped to apprehend two |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | criminals and to enhance public safety in her community, and she has |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | earned the well-deserved admiration of many people; now, therefore, |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby commend Alana Danielle Smith for her quick |

| 38 | 39 | | thinking and composure in a perilous situation and extend to this |

| 39 | 40 | | notable young woman and her family sincere best wishes for the |
