5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Prairie View A&M University lost a beloved member of |

6 | 7 | | its community with the passing of Dr. Waymon T. Webster on February |

7 | 8 | | 16, 2015, at the age of 87; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on July 29, 1927, in Hearne to John and Mary |
---|
9 | 10 | | Webster, Waymon Webster graduated from Blackshear High School and |
---|
10 | 11 | | went on to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Army; upon the |
---|
11 | 12 | | completion of his military service, he enrolled at Prairie View A&M |
---|
12 | 13 | | University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in |
---|
13 | 14 | | music; he later attended the University of North Dakota and Texas |
---|
14 | 15 | | A&M University, where he received his doctorate in educational |
---|
15 | 16 | | psychology; he began his career at the secondary level, working as |
---|
16 | 17 | | the band instructor at Kemp High School for more than a decade; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Webster joined the faculty at Prairie View A&M |
---|
18 | 19 | | in 1967, and over the course of his exemplary tenure at the school, |
---|
19 | 20 | | he worked diligently in behalf of its students while earning the |
---|
20 | 21 | | admiration and respect of his peers; he held a number of |
---|
21 | 22 | | administrative positions, including dean of the graduate school, |
---|
22 | 23 | | head of the psychology department and the department of counselor |
---|
23 | 24 | | education, and coordinator of the counseling program and counseling |
---|
24 | 25 | | services, and he was a member of the Graduate Council and the |
---|
25 | 26 | | Council of Deans; he also gave freely of his time as an advisor for |
---|
26 | 27 | | Phi Delta Kappa and Chi Sigma Iota; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed academician rendered service far |
---|
28 | 29 | | beyond the bounds of his own campus; as a consultant with the |
---|
29 | 30 | | National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, he helped |
---|
30 | 31 | | to evaluate teacher certification programs at a number of schools |
---|
31 | 32 | | in Texas, as well as at Southern University; he also served as a |
---|
32 | 33 | | board member for Brazos County Counseling Services and as a |
---|
33 | 34 | | consultant for cities across the state; he was licensed in a wide |
---|
34 | 35 | | range of counseling disciplines, and he was affiliated with such |
---|
35 | 36 | | professional organizations as the American Counseling Association |
---|
36 | 37 | | and the American Mental Health Counselors Association; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Webster was frequently recognized for his many |
---|
38 | 39 | | academic and professional contributions; among the accolades |
---|
39 | 40 | | conferred on him were Service Awards from Brazos County Counseling |
---|
40 | 41 | | Services and the Prairie View A&M Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and |
---|
41 | 42 | | Distinguished Service Awards from Kemp High School and the Veterans |
---|
42 | 43 | | Institute of Prairie View; and |
---|
43 | 44 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Waymon Webster enjoyed the |
---|
44 | 45 | | love and support of his wife of 57 years, Bernice Webster; he was |
---|
45 | 46 | | the proud father of three children, Jacques, Travis, and Senora, |
---|
46 | 47 | | and he knew the joy of welcoming seven grandchildren into his |
---|
47 | 48 | | cherished family; a man of many interests, he took great pleasure in |
---|
48 | 49 | | fishing, gardening, listening to jazz, arranging music on his |
---|
49 | 50 | | keyboard, and playing bridge; and |
---|
50 | 51 | | WHEREAS, Although Dr. Webster is greatly missed, he has left |
---|
51 | 52 | | an indelible imprint on the lives of countless individuals, and he |
---|
52 | 53 | | will forever be remembered with deep affection by all who were |
---|
53 | 54 | | privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
54 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

55 | 56 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Waymon T. Webster |

56 | 57 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |

57 | 58 | | wife, Bernice Webster; to his children and their spouses, Jacques |

58 | 59 | | Webster and his wife, Wanda, Travis Webster and his wife, Debra, and |
