| 8 | 8 | | United States in the curriculum requirements for public high school |

| 9 | 9 | | students and the posting of the founding documents of the United |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | States in public school buildings. |

| 11 | 11 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 12 | 12 | | SECTION 1. Section 28.025, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | adding Subsection (b-22) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | (b-22) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | requiring students to successfully complete a semester course on |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the founding principles of the United States as part of a district's |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | social studies curriculum. The course must focus on the principles |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | underlying the United States form of government, the Declaration of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Independence, the United States Constitution, the Federalist |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Papers, and the writings of the Founding Fathers of the United |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | States. |

| 22 | 22 | | SECTION 2. Subchapter D, Chapter 11, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | amended by adding Section 11.175 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Sec. 11.175. POSTING OF FOUNDING DOCUMENTS. The board of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | trustees of an independent school district shall permit and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | encourage the posting in a district classroom or school building of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | a copy of the founding documents of the United States, including the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Federalist Papers, and the writings of the Founding Fathers of the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | United States. |

| 31 | 31 | | SECTION 3. Section 28.025(b-22), Education Code, as added |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | by this Act, applies beginning with students who enter the ninth |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | grade during the 2015-2016 school year. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
