55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to bonuses for teachers of students who perform
88 successfully on college advanced placement tests and international
99 baccalaureate examinations.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Section 28.053, Education Code, is amended by
1212 amending Subsections (d), (e), and (f) and adding Subsection (d-1)
1313 to read as follows:
1414 (d) In addition to any portion of a school award distributed
1515 to the teacher in accordance with a plan developed under Subsection
1616 (c), a [A] teacher participating in the program:
1717 (1) may be awarded:
1818 (A) [(1)] subsidized teacher training, not to
1919 exceed $450 for each teacher, for a college advanced placement
2020 course or an international baccalaureate course; and
2121 (B) [(2)] a one-time award of $250 for teaching a
2222 college advanced placement course or an international
2323 baccalaureate course for the first time; and
2424 (2) shall be awarded a bonus in the amount specified by
2525 Subsection (d-1) for each student in a college advanced placement
2626 course or international baccalaureate course taught by the teacher
2727 who performs at the level specified by Subsection (a)(2) on a
2828 college advanced placement test or international baccalaureate
2929 examination
3030 [(3) a share of the teacher bonus pool, which shall be
3131 distributed by the teacher's school in shares proportional to the
3232 number of courses taught].
3333 (d-1) Except as otherwise provided by this subsection, a
3434 teacher shall be awarded a bonus under Subsection (d)(2) of $50 for
3535 each of the teacher's students who performs at the level specified
3636 by Subsection (a)(2), not to exceed a total bonus of $2,000 each
3737 year. A teacher who provides instruction at a campus with an
3838 unacceptable performance rating under Section 39.054 shall be
3939 awarded a bonus of $500 for the first student who performs at the
4040 required level and $50 for each additional student who performs at
4141 that level, not to exceed a total bonus of $2,000 each year.
4242 (e) To be eligible for an award under Subsection (d) or (f),
4343 a teacher must teach a college advanced placement course or an
4444 international baccalaureate course.
4545 (f) From the school awards authorized under Subsection
4646 (a)(2), $50 [Fifty dollars] may be deposited in the teacher bonus
4747 pool for each student enrolled in the school who [that] scores a
4848 three or better on a college advanced placement test or four or
4949 better on an international baccalaureate examination. Any money
5050 placed in the teacher bonus pool shall be distributed by the
5151 teacher's school to teachers participating in the program in shares
5252 proportional to the number of courses taught.
5353 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2015.
