44 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
55 WHEREAS, For well over a century, Americans have set aside a
66 time to honor those members of its military forces who have died in
77 this country's service; and
88 WHEREAS, Originally called Decoration Day, this special
99 remembrance was first observed in 1868, when flowers were placed on
1010 the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers; by the end of the 19th
1111 century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30
1212 throughout the nation, and in 1971 Congress designated the last
1313 Monday in May as Memorial Day; and
1414 WHEREAS, Legions of Americans have stepped forward to serve
1515 their country in times of conflict, and more than a million have
1616 made the ultimate sacrifice; they "gave the last full measure of
1717 devotion" on their native soil, in foreign lands, and on seas around
1818 the world; today, we pause to remember with fresh sorrow all Texans
1919 who have been slain in combat as members of the United States
2020 military, and we acknowledge the profound loss sustained by the
2121 families they have left behind; and
2222 WHEREAS, In memorial ceremonies around the nation, Americans
2323 reflect gratefully on their heritage and recognize the extreme
2424 sacrifices made by all who serve in the armed forces of this
2525 country; now, therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED by the 84th Texas Legislature, That the Senate and
2727 House of Representatives of the State of Texas meet in a joint
2828 memorial session in the Hall of the House of Representatives on
2929 Saturday, May 23, 2015, at 11 a.m., for the Fallen Heroes Memorial
3030 Service to pay tribute to all who have died in the service of this
3131 country and to honor especially the patriotic sons and daughters of
3232 the Lone Star State who have given their lives; and, be it further
3333 RESOLVED, That the Honorable Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas,
3434 all Texas state officials, and the family members of those killed in
3535 the service of this country be, and hereby are, invited to attend
3636 the joint memorial session; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
3838 hereby commemorate Memorial Day 2015 and express deep appreciation
3939 to all the men and women who have served our great country.
