44 Rance William Humphreys
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Dr. Rance William Humphreys, who died on
77 October 29, 2014, at the age of 49; and
88 WHEREAS, Rance William Humphreys was born on July 17, 1965,
99 in Wharton, Texas; he lived the first years of his childhood in
1010 Rosenberg and moved with his family to Jacksonville in 1976; and
1111 WHEREAS, In school, Rance excelled easily; he was a
1212 straight-A student and received academic awards for Biology and
1313 Physics; he was a talented singer in the school choir and show
1414 choir; an excellent golfer, he was a star member of the high
1515 school golf team and also won many golf tournaments; and
1616 WHEREAS, He served as chaplain of the student council, and
1717 he was selected to attend "Boys State" in Austin; he graduated as
1818 valedictorian at the top of his class in 1983 with a 4.0 grade
1919 point average; and
2020 WHEREAS, Rance attended Texas A&M University, following in
2121 the Aggie footsteps of his uncles; he graduated in 1987 and was
2222 accepted into the university's school of medicine; he continued
2323 to exercise his creative talent during his time at the university
2424 as a member of the world-famous Texas A&M University Singing
2525 Cadets; he toured Europe with the group in the spring of 1987,
2626 served as the group's vice president, and performed the lead role
2727 in the barbershop quartet "The Aggienizors"; and
2828 WHEREAS, After his first year of medical school, Rance was
2929 awarded a scholarship from the United States Army, and he
3030 committed to serving the nation during and after medical school;
3131 he received his medical degree from Texas A&M University in 1991
3232 with a specialty in psychiatry; he completed his psychiatric
3333 residency in the army at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia, and
3434 briefly served at Fort Stewart, near Savannah, before returning
3535 to Augusta; and
3636 WHEREAS, Dr. Humphreys was promoted to the rank of major in
3737 1995 and served as the director of the psychiatric resident
3838 doctors at Fort Gordon; he deeply enjoyed mentoring the young
3939 resident doctors, and when the residency program at Fort Gordon
4040 was closed, Major Humphreys decided to leave the army and go into
4141 private practice; he received an honorable discharge in 1999 and
4242 moved to Dalton, Georgia, to start his practice; and
4343 WHEREAS, He was a highly respected psychiatrist in
4444 northern Georgia for 15 years, and he successfully helped many
4545 military veterans and their families in dealing with
4646 posttraumatic stress disorder; in addition to seeing patients at
4747 his office, Dr. Humphreys was a rotating physician at the local
4848 hospital, and he was a staff physician at the Youth Detention
4949 Center; and
5050 WHEREAS, Rance Humphreys was an exemplary citizen, an
5151 exceptional doctor, and a loyal friend, and he leaves behind
5252 memories that will long be cherished by those who were privileged
5353 to share in his life; although he spent the second half of his
5454 life in Georgia, Rance's heart always remained in Texas; now,
5555 therefore, be it
5656 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
5757 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5858 family of Rance William Humphreys: his parents, Charles and
5959 Glenda Humphreys; his sister, Tana Switsky; his brother-in-law,
6060 Joel Switsky; and his nephews, Ewan and Ethan Switsky; and, be it
6161 further
6262 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
6363 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy and that when the
6464 Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rance Humphreys.
