| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize June 6, 2015, as Transverse Myelitis Awareness Day in |

| 4 | 4 | | Texas; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Transverse myelitis is a devastating neurological |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | condition that targets the myelin that covers nerve cell fibers |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and causes the spinal cord to become inflamed; an estimated 1,400 |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | people in the United States are diagnosed with the condition each |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | year; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Symptoms of transverse myelitis include severe |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | neurological pain, muscle weakness, and numbness in the lower |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | extremities; in severe cases, the disorder can lead to paralysis |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and possibly death; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Transverse myelitis is not widely known to the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | general public and can be difficult to diagnose; known causes of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the condition include certain infections and immune system |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | disorders; in 60 percent of the cases, the cause is unknown; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Transverse Myelitis Network and the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Transverse Myelitis Folks are among the organizations providing |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | support and resources for those affected by the debilitating |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | spinal cord disorder; a greater public awareness of the disorder |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | is key to furthering scientific research and to improving |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | treatment for those living with the condition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature, hereby commend all those who are working to raise |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | awareness and to further our understanding of this neurological |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | disorder and recognize June 6, 2015, as Transverse Myelitis |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Awareness Day in Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | honor of Transverse Awareness Myelitis Day. |
