11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1069
22 WHEREAS, The State of Texas is home to a wealth of natural,
33 cultural, and historic sites that enjoy national and
44 international recognition for their significance; and
55 WHEREAS, Among these sites are 15 that are overseen by the
66 National Park Service; they include such natural wonders as the
77 rugged Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which encompasses the
88 highest peak in Texas, and the windswept Padre Island National
99 Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in
1010 the world, as well as such historic structures as the frontier
1111 military post at Fort Davis, the 300-year-old missions in San
1212 Antonio, and the ranch house of President Lyndon B. Johnson; the
1313 Texas components of the National Park System offer protection to
1414 21 threatened and endangered species, preserve important pieces
1515 of Texas and American history, and provide the state with
1616 $238,900,000 in economic benefit; and
1717 WHEREAS, Texans have long realized the importance of
1818 conserving their natural and historical heritage, and they have
1919 played a vital role in the creation of National Park Service
2020 units in the state; Big Bend, the first national park established
2121 in Texas, was made possible with the appropriation of $1.5
2222 million by the 47th Texas Legislature, funds that enabled the
2323 purchase of most of the land; the state also donated Rancho de las
2424 Cabras, the mission ranch of San Francisco de la Espada, for
2525 inclusion in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park;
2626 moreover, the City of Waco has approved the transfer of the Waco
2727 Mammoth Site to the federal government for the purpose of
2828 establishing it as a national monument; and
2929 WHEREAS, In addition to its National Park Service sites,
3030 Texas boasts 3,189 structures that have been listed in the
3131 National Register of Historic Places, as well as 46 National
3232 Historic Landmarks, including the Apollo Mission Control Center
3333 in Houston, the Governor's Mansion in Austin, and the USS
3434 Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi; the 20 National
3535 Natural Landmarks in Texas include Enchanted Rock, the High
3636 Plains Natural Area, and Palo Duro Canyon; and
3737 WHEREAS, Two sites in Texas, the Big Thicket National
3838 Preserve and the Chihuahuan Desert Biosphere Reserve, have
3939 received further international recognition with their
4040 designation as United Nations Educational, Scientific, and
4141 Cultural Organization International Biosphere Reserves; in
4242 addition, the Alamo, the other San Antonio missions, and Rancho
4343 de las Cabras have been proposed for inclusion on the
4444 organization's prestigious list of World Heritage sites; and
4545 WHEREAS, All these treasures, and many others, are of
4646 immense cultural, historical, ecological, and economic
4747 importance, and they are a source of tremendous pride to all
4848 Texans; now, therefore, be it
4949 RESOLVED, That the Senate of State of Texas, 84th
5050 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the nationally and
5151 internationally recognized natural and historic sites in the
5252 Lone Star State.
