2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas is home to a wealth of natural, |

3 | 3 | | cultural, and historic sites that enjoy national and |
---|
4 | 4 | | international recognition for their significance; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Among these sites are 15 that are overseen by the |
---|
6 | 6 | | National Park Service; they include such natural wonders as the |
---|
7 | 7 | | rugged Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which encompasses the |
---|
8 | 8 | | highest peak in Texas, and the windswept Padre Island National |
---|
9 | 9 | | Seashore, the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in |
---|
10 | 10 | | the world, as well as such historic structures as the frontier |
---|
11 | 11 | | military post at Fort Davis, the 300-year-old missions in San |
---|
12 | 12 | | Antonio, and the ranch house of President Lyndon B. Johnson; the |
---|
13 | 13 | | Texas components of the National Park System offer protection to |
---|
14 | 14 | | 21 threatened and endangered species, preserve important pieces |
---|
15 | 15 | | of Texas and American history, and provide the state with |
---|
16 | 16 | | $238,900,000 in economic benefit; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Texans have long realized the importance of |
---|
18 | 18 | | conserving their natural and historical heritage, and they have |
---|
19 | 19 | | played a vital role in the creation of National Park Service |
---|
20 | 20 | | units in the state; Big Bend, the first national park established |
---|
21 | 21 | | in Texas, was made possible with the appropriation of $1.5 |
---|
22 | 22 | | million by the 47th Texas Legislature, funds that enabled the |
---|
23 | 23 | | purchase of most of the land; the state also donated Rancho de las |
---|
24 | 24 | | Cabras, the mission ranch of San Francisco de la Espada, for |
---|
25 | 25 | | inclusion in the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park; |
---|
26 | 26 | | moreover, the City of Waco has approved the transfer of the Waco |
---|
27 | 27 | | Mammoth Site to the federal government for the purpose of |
---|
28 | 28 | | establishing it as a national monument; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In addition to its National Park Service sites, |
---|
30 | 30 | | Texas boasts 3,189 structures that have been listed in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | National Register of Historic Places, as well as 46 National |
---|
32 | 32 | | Historic Landmarks, including the Apollo Mission Control Center |
---|
33 | 33 | | in Houston, the Governor's Mansion in Austin, and the USS |
---|
34 | 34 | | Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi; the 20 National |
---|
35 | 35 | | Natural Landmarks in Texas include Enchanted Rock, the High |
---|
36 | 36 | | Plains Natural Area, and Palo Duro Canyon; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Two sites in Texas, the Big Thicket National |
---|
38 | 38 | | Preserve and the Chihuahuan Desert Biosphere Reserve, have |
---|
39 | 39 | | received further international recognition with their |
---|
40 | 40 | | designation as United Nations Educational, Scientific, and |
---|
41 | 41 | | Cultural Organization International Biosphere Reserves; in |
---|
42 | 42 | | addition, the Alamo, the other San Antonio missions, and Rancho |
---|
43 | 43 | | de las Cabras have been proposed for inclusion on the |
---|
44 | 44 | | organization's prestigious list of World Heritage sites; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, All these treasures, and many others, are of |
---|
46 | 46 | | immense cultural, historical, ecological, and economic |
---|
47 | 47 | | importance, and they are a source of tremendous pride to all |
---|
48 | 48 | | Texans; now, therefore, be it |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of State of Texas, 84th |
---|
50 | 50 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the nationally and |
---|
51 | 51 | | internationally recognized natural and historic sites in the |
---|
52 | 52 | | Lone Star State. |
