1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud community members are gathering in Austin
3	3	on February 10, 2015, to celebrate South Texas Independent School
4	4	District Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Originally known as the Rio Grande Rehabilitation
6	6	District, the South Texas Independent School District was
7	7	established in 1964 to create further educational opportunities
8	8	for area youths with disabilities; in 1973, legislators
9	9	broadened the district's purpose to allow it to operate
10	10	vocational magnet schools, and as a result, the district opened
11	11	South Texas High School for Health Professions in 1984 and the
12	12	Science Academy of South Texas five years later; the district
13	13	established the Teacher Academy of South Texas in 1993,
14	14	subsequently renaming the school South Texas Business, Education
15	15	and Technology Academy to better reflect its focus; over the
16	16	following years, the magnet program continued to expand with the
17	17	addition of South Texas Academy for Medical Professions and South
18	18	Texas Preparatory Academy; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Currently encompassing five magnet schools in
20	20	Edinburg, San Benito, and Mercedes, South Texas Independent
21	21	School District is the only all-magnet district in the state; it
22	22	serves more than 3,300 junior high and high school students and
23	23	maintains an open enrollment policy that attracts interested and
24	24	hardworking pupils from 28 school districts in Cameron, Hidalgo,
25	25	and Willacy Counties, and it continues to provide educational and
26	26	occupational training for students with special needs through
27	27	its career and technology program; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The district's superintendent, Dr. Marla M. Guerra,
29	29	ably guides a staff of accomplished teachers, administrators,
30	30	and support personnel who are deeply committed to the success of
31	31	young people in the tri-county area; in 2014, their work was
32	32	recognized when the Texas Education Agency gave every campus in
33	33	the district the highest accountability rating and maximum
34	34	number of distinction designations available; and
35	35	WHEREAS, The faculty and staff of South Texas Independent
36	36	School District continue to look for new ways to help students
37	37	achieve, lead, and contribute to a changing world; to that end,
38	38	the district's second middle school, South Texas Academy of
39	39	Rising Scholars, will open in the fall of 2015; and
40	40	WHEREAS, For more than half a century, the South Texas
41	41	Independent School District has dedicated itself to offering
42	42	students the best educational opportunities possible, and in so
43	43	doing, it has equipped several generations of Texans with the
44	44	knowledge and skills necessary to build a brighter future; now,
45	45	therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
47	47	Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2015, as South Texas
48	48	Independent School District Day at the State Capitol and extend
49	49	to all those in attendance sincere best wishes for an enjoyable
50	50	visit to Austin; and, be it further
51	51	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
52	52	prepared for the district as an expression of high regard from
53	53	the Texas Senate.
