11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 129
22 WHEREAS, The celebration of Lufkin-Angelina County Day at
33 the Capitol on February 11, 2015, provides a fitting opportunity
44 to recognize this outstanding part of the Lone Star State and to
55 welcome visitors from the area, including members of the
66 Lufkin/Angelina Chamber of Commerce and of the Leadership Lufkin
77 Class of 2014-2015; and
88 WHEREAS, Organized in 1846, Angelina County was named for
99 a Hainai Indian maiden who is said to have aided Spanish
1010 missionaries living in the area around 1690; the county is
1111 situated in the Texas Forest Country, in a region nestled
1212 between the Angelina River on the north and the Neches River on
1313 the south; and
1414 WHEREAS, Since the arrival of the railroads in the 1880s,
1515 Angelina County has consistently benefited from a thriving
1616 lumber business, and over the years, a variety of other
1717 industries have flourished as well, including farming and
1818 manufacturing; and
1919 WHEREAS, Angelina County has long been an area rich in
2020 natural and cultural resources, and residents enjoy a wealth of
2121 recreational opportunities; the county is home to the Angelina
2222 National Forest, and the region's largest lake, the Sam Rayburn
2323 Reservoir, offers superior bass fishing and an outlet for
2424 swimming and boating; moreover, the county seat of Lufkin
2525 features such compelling attractions as the Texas Forestry
2626 Museum, the Museum of East Texas, and the Ellen Trout Zoo; and
2727 WHEREAS, Lufkin and Angelina County have become the
2828 regional hub for medical, retail, and government offices in a
2929 12-county region of East Texas, and it gives the members of this
3030 chamber great pleasure to honor the many significant
3131 contributions of this fine Texas county and city to our state;
3232 now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3434 Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2015, as
3535 Lufkin-Angelina County Day at the Capitol and extend best wishes
3636 to the visiting delegation; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3838 honor of Lufkin and Angelina County.
