1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 142
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	welcome the citizens of the neighboring communities of Harlingen
4	4	and San Benito who are visiting Austin on Harlingen-San Benito
5	5	Day at the Capitol, February 11, 2015; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Harlingen traces its roots to Lon C. Hill, who
7	7	proposed the town site be astride the tracks of the Saint Louis,
8	8	Brownsville, and Mexico Railway; Harlingen was then destined to
9	9	become a crossroads, and the first train passed through on July 4,
10	10	1904; and
11	11	WHEREAS, Harlingen's World War II army air field evolved into
12	12	Harlingen Air Force Base, and later, into Valley International
13	13	Airport, the region's largest airport; additionally, Harlingen's
14	14	Free Trade Bridge provides access to Mexico, and its barge port
15	15	connects to the Intracoastal Waterway; and
16	16	WHEREAS, The area's semitropical climate, natural resources,
17	17	and friendly people have long made Harlingen a destination for
18	18	travelers, including Winter Texans, birders, and other outdoor
19	19	enthusiasts; attractions include the Iwo Jima Memorial, the
20	20	historic downtown district with its mural and heritage trails, and
21	21	an abundance of parks and sports facilities; and
22	22	WHEREAS, The City of San Benito began to flourish due to
23	23	the efforts of such early pioneers as Colonel Sam Robertson;
24	24	through the creation of an expansive irrigation system and the
25	25	development of a significant railroad system and network, San
26	26	Benito contributed greatly to the economic rise of Cameron County
27	27	and the Rio Grande Valley; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Through the years, San Benito has been an asset to
29	29	our state and nation in multiple ways; the city's sons and
30	30	daughters have played a significant role in our country's defense
31	31	by their service in conflicts around the world; in addition, San
32	32	Benito promotes, preserves, and supports the cultural arts and
33	33	institutes that generate tourism in Texas; the city is home to
34	34	the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the San Benito
35	35	History Museum, the Freddy Fender Museum, and the Narciso
36	36	Martinez Cultural Arts Center; and
37	37	WHEREAS, The residents of Harlingen and San Benito have
38	38	developed a regional health care hub that includes the Valley
39	39	Baptist Health System, the Harlingen Medical Center, and Muñiz
40	40	Rio Grande Pharmacy; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Residents of both cities have long understood the
42	42	importance of education as a key to the future and have supported
43	43	efforts to expand public and private schools; the area's assets
44	44	include Texas State Technical College and the Regional Academic
45	45	Health Center, which has been an integral part of medical
46	46	services and education in the Rio Grande Valley since 1999; and
47	47	WHEREAS, The Cities of Harlingen and San Benito are home to
48	48	more than 100,000 Texans, and residents proudly embrace the
49	49	colorful history of their communities while confidently
50	50	anticipating a prosperous future; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
52	52	Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Harlingen and San
53	53	Benito on their many contributions to the growth and prosperity
54	54	of our state and extend to them best wishes for a productive and
55	55	rewarding Harlingen-San Benito Day at the Capitol; and, be it further
56	56	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
57	57	honor of this special occasion.
