11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 145
22 WHEREAS, The Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi is an
33 outstanding institution that is committed to connecting people
44 with nature and promoting conservation of the Gulf of Mexico; and
55 WHEREAS, After two decades of planning and fund-raising,
66 the Texas State Aquarium first opened the doors to its original
77 Gulf of Mexico exhibit in 1990; over the years, many new
88 permanent and special exhibits have been introduced, allowing
99 spectators to see a live bald eagle, to touch and feed stingrays,
1010 to watch Atlantic bottlenose dolphins play, and to get an
1111 underwater view of the habitat formed around an oil platform in
1212 the Gulf; the aquarium also features a splash park, an artificial
1313 fossil dig site for uncovering casts of prehistoric animal bones,
1414 and the Hawn Wild Flight Theater, with presentations featuring
1515 trained birds, and in 2014, it announced an expansion project
1616 that will more than double the size of the facilities; and
1717 WHEREAS, In addition to entertaining and delighting
1818 visitors, this private, not-for-profit institution gives back to
1919 the community through its education and conservation programs;
2020 field trips, summer camps, and distance learning empower Texans of
2121 all ages to discover more about nature and marine wildlife, while
2222 the Second Chances Wildlife Rehabilitation Program provides care
2323 for ill or injured shorebirds, birds of prey, marine mammals, and
2424 sea turtles, returning them to their natural habitats whenever
2525 possible; furthermore, the aquarium coordinates beach cleanups
2626 three times a year, fosters awareness of Texas watersheds with its
2727 Keepers of the Coast program, and awards grants through its
2828 Wildlife Care, Conservation, and Research Fund; and
2929 WHEREAS, The Texas State Aquarium has been honored with
3030 numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Public-Private
3131 Partnership Award from Mutual of America, the Munson Aquatic
3232 Conservation Exhibitry Award from the American Zoo and Aquarium
3333 Association, and the Conservation and Environmental Stewardship
3434 Award for Public Awareness from the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation;
3535 in 2014, it became one of only six aquariums in the nation to earn
3636 a prestigious four-star rating from Charity Navigator; and
3737 WHEREAS, By encouraging Texans to appreciate the diversity
3838 and vulnerability of marine life, the aquarium is making a
3939 significant contribution to the Lone Star State, and the efforts
4040 and achievements of all involved in this worthy endeavor indeed
4141 merit special commendation; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4343 Legislature, hereby recognize February 10, 2015, as Texas State
4444 Aquarium Day and extend to all those associated with the aquarium
4545 sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
4747 prepared for the Texas State Aquarium as an expression of high
4848 regard from the Texas Senate.
