1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 149
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
3	3	pleasure in joining the citizens of Chambers County for the
4	4	celebration of Chambers County Day at the Capitol on February 10,
5	5	2015; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Chambers County is situated on 600 square miles of
7	7	Gulf Coast plains, and it has a long and colorful history; in
8	8	1756, Spaniards erected a mission and presidio near present-day
9	9	Wallisville to secure their control of the region, and in 1818, a
10	10	group of French supporters of Napoleon Bonaparte established a
11	11	short-lived colony near present-day Anahuac; later, in 1832 and
12	12	1835, disturbances at Anahuac between Anglo settlers and Mexican
13	13	authorities foreshadowed the Texas Revolution; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Chambers County was created from portions of
15	15	Liberty and Jefferson Counties in 1858 and named in honor of a
16	16	prominent local resident, General T. J. Chambers; Wallisville
17	17	served as the county seat until 1908, when Anahuac assumed that
18	18	role; other communities in the county today include Beach City,
19	19	Cove, Double Bayou, Hankamer, Mont Belvieu, Oak Island, Old
20	20	River-Winfree, Smith Point, Stowell, and Winnie; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Countless tourists are drawn to many attractions
22	22	and events offered by Chambers County; Anahuac, officially known
23	23	as the Alligator Capital of Texas, hosts the Texas Gatorfest each
24	24	September at Fort Anahuac Park, the site of early Texas
25	25	resistance to Mexican rule; another major celebration is the
26	26	Texas Rice Festival, which is held in September and October; and
27	27	WHEREAS, Visitors are also drawn by historic sites,
28	28	excellent golf courses, and bountiful opportunities for birding,
29	29	fishing, hunting, crabbing, boating, and photography; among the
30	30	standout attractions are Wallisville Heritage Park, Houston
31	31	Raceway Park, Moody National Wildlife Refuge, Anahuac National
32	32	Wildlife Refuge, and the Corps of Engineers Trinity River
33	33	Recreation Area; and
34	34	WHEREAS, In addition to tourism, other enterprises that
35	35	contribute to the county's economy include the petroleum
36	36	industry, chemical plants, agribusiness, fish and oyster
37	37	processing, and manufacturing; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Chambers County is situated between the Houston
39	39	metroplex and the Golden Triangle of Beaumont-Orange-Port
40	40	Arthur, and it offers its people the best of both worlds--quiet,
41	41	rural living and convenient access to big-city amenities; and
42	42	WHEREAS, The residents of Chambers County are justifiably
43	43	proud of their achievements, for this noteworthy region and its
44	44	citizens have played a significant role in the development of the
45	45	Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
46	46	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
47	47	Legislature, hereby declare February 10, 2015, Chambers County
48	48	Day at the Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the fine citizens
49	49	who have traveled to Austin to celebrate this occasion; and, be
50	50	it further
51	51	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
52	52	the people of Chambers County as a memento of this special
53	53	occasion.
