1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 151
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud residents of the Mid-Valley region of Texas
3	3	are gathering in Austin on February 11, 2015, to celebrate
4	4	Mid-Valley Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, Located in eastern Hidalgo County in the Rio
6	6	Grande Valley, the Mid-Valley region includes the towns of Alamo,
7	7	Donna, Mercedes, Pharr, Progreso, Progreso Lakes, San Juan, and
8	8	Weslaco; this area is a center for agribusiness, with farmers
9	9	producing sugarcane, grains, and citrus fruit such as
10	10	grapefruits and oranges; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The city of Alamo is located in proximity to the
12	12	Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses more than
13	13	2,000 acres of protected land and is home to a wide array of
14	14	animals and plants; in addition, the town boasts a birding
15	15	information center and the popular Alamo Central Park; and
16	16	WHEREAS, Upholding the motto "the City with a Heart in the
17	17	Heart of the Rio Grande Valley," Donna serves as the location of
18	18	the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge, which helps to
19	19	facilitate shopping, tourism, and commercial trade to and from
20	20	Mexico; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Mercedes has long been a major center for the
22	22	processing and marketing of livestock, cotton, and vegetables,
23	23	and it is also known for its boot makers and the shopping
24	24	opportunities at the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets; the
25	25	annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo draws more than
26	26	200,000 people to town each year, and the event provides valuable
27	27	scholarship funds for 4-H and FFA students; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Pharr is widely recognized as the "Hub City" of
29	29	the Rio Grande Valley and is the proud owner and operator of the
30	30	Pharr International Bridge, which for over 20 years has served as
31	31	a safe, convenient, and dependable conduit of fruits,
32	32	vegetables, and vital textiles entering this country; in
33	33	recognition of its commitment to historic preservation, economic
34	34	development, and international commerce, this All-America City
35	35	will forever carry the distinction of being Texas' first "Triple
36	36	Crown City"; and
37	37	WHEREAS, In addition to being centers for the sugarcane
38	38	business, Progreso and Progreso Lakes have been serving as
39	39	gateways to the Rio Grande Valley since the opening of the
40	40	Progreso/Nuevo Progreso International Bridge in 2003; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Fast-growing San Juan is the home of the Basilica
42	42	of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine, which attracts
43	43	multitudes of pilgrims from throughout the United States and
44	44	Mexico; the town hosts an annual Spring Fiesta and is the site of
45	45	numerous parks, including Liberty Park, with its flagpole
46	46	monument that honors those who have served in the United States
47	47	armed forces; and
48	48	WHEREAS, The city of Weslaco has become a favorite
49	49	destination for tourists, golfers, retirees, and birders and is
50	50	the location of two important Texas A&M University research
51	51	stations; the annual Onion Fest celebrates the development of the
52	52	famous Texas 1015 onion in Weslaco, and this popular event brings
53	53	many visitors to the city; and
54	54	WHEREAS, Throughout the Mid-Valley region, great emphasis
55	55	is placed on the value of education, and the Science Academy of
56	56	South Texas in Mercedes consistently ranks among the top 100 on
57	57	Newsweek's list of "America's Best High Schools"; IDEA Public
58	58	Schools, a nonprofit network of public charter schools, operates
59	59	26 schools in the Rio Grande Valley; with a mission of preparing
60	60	all students for success in college and beyond, these schools
61	61	have helped to educate countless young people who have gone on to
62	62	become confident, contributing members of their communities; and
63	63	WHEREAS, The residents of this dynamic region of the Lone
64	64	Star State are justifiably proud of their hard work, civic
65	65	commitment, and innovative spirit, and their efforts have
66	66	created a group of notable Texas communities that are well
67	67	prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future;
68	68	now, therefore, be it
69	69	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
70	70	Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2015, as Mid-Valley
71	71	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
72	72	sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in
73	73	Austin; and, be it further
74	74	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
75	75	honor of this special day.
