11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 151
22 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the Mid-Valley region of Texas
33 are gathering in Austin on February 11, 2015, to celebrate
44 Mid-Valley Day at the State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Located in eastern Hidalgo County in the Rio
66 Grande Valley, the Mid-Valley region includes the towns of Alamo,
77 Donna, Mercedes, Pharr, Progreso, Progreso Lakes, San Juan, and
88 Weslaco; this area is a center for agribusiness, with farmers
99 producing sugarcane, grains, and citrus fruit such as
1010 grapefruits and oranges; and
1111 WHEREAS, The city of Alamo is located in proximity to the
1212 Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses more than
1313 2,000 acres of protected land and is home to a wide array of
1414 animals and plants; in addition, the town boasts a birding
1515 information center and the popular Alamo Central Park; and
1616 WHEREAS, Upholding the motto "the City with a Heart in the
1717 Heart of the Rio Grande Valley," Donna serves as the location of
1818 the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge, which helps to
1919 facilitate shopping, tourism, and commercial trade to and from
2020 Mexico; and
2121 WHEREAS, Mercedes has long been a major center for the
2222 processing and marketing of livestock, cotton, and vegetables,
2323 and it is also known for its boot makers and the shopping
2424 opportunities at the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets; the
2525 annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo draws more than
2626 200,000 people to town each year, and the event provides valuable
2727 scholarship funds for 4-H and FFA students; and
2828 WHEREAS, Pharr is widely recognized as the "Hub City" of
2929 the Rio Grande Valley and is the proud owner and operator of the
3030 Pharr International Bridge, which for over 20 years has served as
3131 a safe, convenient, and dependable conduit of fruits,
3232 vegetables, and vital textiles entering this country; in
3333 recognition of its commitment to historic preservation, economic
3434 development, and international commerce, this All-America City
3535 will forever carry the distinction of being Texas' first "Triple
3636 Crown City"; and
3737 WHEREAS, In addition to being centers for the sugarcane
3838 business, Progreso and Progreso Lakes have been serving as
3939 gateways to the Rio Grande Valley since the opening of the
4040 Progreso/Nuevo Progreso International Bridge in 2003; and
4141 WHEREAS, Fast-growing San Juan is the home of the Basilica
4242 of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine, which attracts
4343 multitudes of pilgrims from throughout the United States and
4444 Mexico; the town hosts an annual Spring Fiesta and is the site of
4545 numerous parks, including Liberty Park, with its flagpole
4646 monument that honors those who have served in the United States
4747 armed forces; and
4848 WHEREAS, The city of Weslaco has become a favorite
4949 destination for tourists, golfers, retirees, and birders and is
5050 the location of two important Texas A&M University research
5151 stations; the annual Onion Fest celebrates the development of the
5252 famous Texas 1015 onion in Weslaco, and this popular event brings
5353 many visitors to the city; and
5454 WHEREAS, Throughout the Mid-Valley region, great emphasis
5555 is placed on the value of education, and the Science Academy of
5656 South Texas in Mercedes consistently ranks among the top 100 on
5757 Newsweek's list of "America's Best High Schools"; IDEA Public
5858 Schools, a nonprofit network of public charter schools, operates
5959 26 schools in the Rio Grande Valley; with a mission of preparing
6060 all students for success in college and beyond, these schools
6161 have helped to educate countless young people who have gone on to
6262 become confident, contributing members of their communities; and
6363 WHEREAS, The residents of this dynamic region of the Lone
6464 Star State are justifiably proud of their hard work, civic
6565 commitment, and innovative spirit, and their efforts have
6666 created a group of notable Texas communities that are well
6767 prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future;
6868 now, therefore, be it
6969 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
7070 Legislature, hereby recognize February 11, 2015, as Mid-Valley
7171 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
7272 sincere best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in
7373 Austin; and, be it further
7474 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
7575 honor of this special day.
