2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature is |

3 | 3 | | celebrating its 30th anniversary on February 17, 2015, and this |
---|
4 | 4 | | occasion provides a welcome opportunity to honor this noteworthy |
---|
5 | 5 | | organization; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, the 69th Texas Legislature authorized |
---|
7 | 7 | | the creation of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature, which met |
---|
8 | 8 | | for its first session in the house chambers during the following |
---|
9 | 9 | | interim; the group represents older constituents, and its |
---|
10 | 10 | | members, who are at least 60 years of age, are elected to two-year |
---|
11 | 11 | | terms by their peers in 28 districts across the state; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature promotes good |
---|
13 | 13 | | government for all Texans by encouraging active participation in |
---|
14 | 14 | | civic life; its members assist in formulating legislative |
---|
15 | 15 | | priorities and serve as a resource to the public and private |
---|
16 | 16 | | sectors on matters of concern to seniors; in addition, the |
---|
17 | 17 | | organization provides advocacy training to help members become |
---|
18 | 18 | | more effective in the civic life of their own communities; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the organization's involvement |
---|
20 | 20 | | has resulted in legislative action on a number of issues; such |
---|
21 | 21 | | instances include the passage of laws freezing city, county, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | junior college district taxes for elderly and disabled |
---|
23 | 23 | | homeowners, creating the Silver Alert for missing seniors, |
---|
24 | 24 | | requiring criminal background checks for employees at special |
---|
25 | 25 | | care facilities, and providing custodial grandparents with the |
---|
26 | 26 | | ability to enroll their grandchildren in school; in addition, the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Texas Silver-Haired Legislature played a key role in the |
---|
28 | 28 | | establishment of the Joint Legislative Committee on Aging; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The vitality of our democratic system depends on |
---|
30 | 30 | | the engagement of an informed citizenry, and for three decades, |
---|
31 | 31 | | the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature has partnered successfully |
---|
32 | 32 | | with the Texas Legislature, serving as a vital source of wisdom, |
---|
33 | 33 | | knowledge, and experience; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 30th anniversary of the |
---|
36 | 36 | | Texas Silver-Haired Legislature and honor the members of the |
---|
37 | 37 | | organization for their outstanding contributions to the Lone |
---|
38 | 38 | | Star State; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
---|
40 | 40 | | organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
