| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | of Andrews County and Texans across the state in celebrating |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | February 18, 2015, as Andrews County Day at the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated on the high plains of the Permian Basin, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Andrews County was established in 1876 and formally organized in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 1910 with Andrews as its county seat; it is named for Richard |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Andrews, an early settler and soldier in the revolutionary army and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the first man to die in the Texas War for Independence in 1835; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Andrews County has long been a leader in the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | ranching industry in Texas; the county also became an important |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | source of cotton and sorghum with the advent of the widespread |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | use of windmills; it experienced an impressive oil boom during |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the 1940s and has recently experienced the greatest period of |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | growth and development in its history; as the fastest-growing |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | micropolitan area in Texas, it remains one of the state's leading |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | producers of oil and gas, having just produced its three |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | billionth barrel of oil since 1929; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, With unprecedented support from the citizens, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | elected representatives, and civic organizations of the area, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Andrews County hosts the most advanced secure facility for the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | disposal of Class A, B, and C low-level radioactive waste in the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | United States; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The Andrews Independent School District is noted for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | academic excellence, with its teams having earned top honors at |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | numerous University Interscholastic League academic competitions; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The people of Andrews County enjoy an abundance of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | recreational opportunities, including the Andrews County Golf |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Course and many exemplary area parks; the county boasts an annual |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | bluegrass festival, and the Andrews Art Guild Show provides a |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | forum for artists to display their works; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Andrews County on |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | their many contributions to the rich history of our state and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | extend to them best wishes for a memorable Andrews County Day at |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
