| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas, one |
|---|
| 3 | 3 | | of the nation's oldest law enforcement organizations, are |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | gathering in Austin on February 18, 2015, to participate in |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Sheriffs' Association of Texas Day at the Capitol; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Constitution created the office of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | sheriff in each county of the state; legislation requires that a |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | sheriff conserve peace and enforce the criminal laws of the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | state; moreover, the sheriff is responsible for the county jail, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | bail bonds, civil process, and the security of the courts, and in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | some smaller counties, the sheriff may also act as the tax |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | collector; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The first meeting of the Sheriffs' Association of |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Texas took place on August 14, 1874; association members adopted |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | their preamble calling for sheriffs to assist one another in the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | execution of laws, in the discharge of their duties against |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | criminals, and in the protection of the citizens in their |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | respective counties and throughout the state; the group has |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | continued to follow the dictates of this mission to this day; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The office of sheriff is one of the oldest forms |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | of law enforcement; sheriffs in our state's 254 counties are |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | elected to four-year terms, and each sheriff is a member of the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Sheriffs' Association of Texas; in addition, more than 2,500 |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | individuals are active members of the group, and over 50,000 |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | individuals are associate members; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The men and women of the Sheriffs' Association of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Texas are helping to make the Lone Star State an even safer place, and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | their work benefits countless people each day; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2015, as Sheriffs' |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Association of Texas Day at the Capitol and commend the members |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas for their many |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | contributions to their communities; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | prepared for the association as an expression of high regard from |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | the Texas Senate. |
