| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the citizens of West and the many first responders who |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | helped the city recover from the devastation of the West |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Fertilizer Company explosion; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, On April 17, 2013, an explosion shook the City of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | West with the force of an earthquake that could be felt 50 miles |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | away; hundreds of homes were damaged and the community was left |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | with $100 million in property damage; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Most tragically, 15 citizens lost their lives that |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | day, and 12 of those were first responders seeking to help those |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in danger; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In true Texas form, firefighters from across the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | state worked alongside the West Volunteer Fire Department in |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the aftermath of the explosion; two civilians, Jimmy Matus and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | William Uptmor Jr., lost their lives while assisting others and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | were posthumously named honorary firefighters by the West |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Volunteer Fire Department; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The City of West is a small community, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | residents share in a proud heritage of helping one another |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | through difficult times; the citizens joined together to help |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | their neighbors recover from the tragic event, and they are |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | indeed worthy of recognition for their courage and resolve; now, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Legislature, hereby commend the residents of West and all the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | brave first responders who helped the city recover from the West |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Fertilizer Company explosion; and, be it further |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the city as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
