11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 202
22 WHEREAS, On February 18 and 19, 2015, members of the
33 Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches,
44 and Stephen F. Austin State University and its Student Government
55 and Alumni Associations are visiting Austin to celebrate
66 Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol; and
77 WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is the site of a Caddo Native American
88 settlement and a Spanish mission established in 1716; founded by
99 Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, it received designation from Spain as a
1010 pueblo in 1779, and today it proudly calls itself the first town
1111 in Texas, and it has also been designated the official Garden
1212 Capital of Texas; and
1313 WHEREAS, The city became an important gateway for trade
1414 with the French and later the Americans, and, among a lengthy
1515 list of Texas milestones, it claims to be home to the state's
1616 first English-language newspaper, oil well, and two-story
1717 building, as well as the state's inaugural district court
1818 session; the nine flags flown over the city include those of
1919 three short-lived early republics; and
2020 WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings
2121 myriad tourists, who explore such attractions as the Old Stone
2222 Fort, the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century
2323 buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and
2424 restaurants along brick downtown streets; many also come to enjoy
2525 recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches, Lake Naconiche, and
2626 Sam Rayburn Reservoir, all known for their bass fishing; in
2727 addition to tourism, the primary industries of the area include
2828 agricultural services, manufacturing, and oil and gas; and
2929 WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's
3030 economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors
3131 to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was
3232 organized just five years later and has worked diligently through
3333 the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of
3434 approximately 13,000 students; the university boasts an
3535 exceptionally scenic campus recognized for the SFA Gardens and
3636 also operates a beef and poultry farm, a dairy farm, an
3737 experimental forest, a forestry field station, and the Waters of
3838 East Texas Center; its observatory is the second largest not only
3939 in Texas but also in the Central Time Zone; and
4040 WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Texas Forest Country,
4141 Nacogdoches is attracting active retired Texans; it was one of
4242 the first three communities in Texas recognized as a Go Texan
4343 certified retirement community because of its cultural and
4444 sporting events, health care, safety, and continuing education
4545 opportunities; and
4646 WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a
4747 neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place to
4848 live, work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those
4949 representing the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone
5050 Star State; now, therefore, be it
5151 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
5252 Legislature, hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2015, as
5353 Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol and extend to the
5454 visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
