1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 202
2	2	WHEREAS, On February 18 and 19, 2015, members of the
3	3	Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Nacogdoches,
4	4	and Stephen F. Austin State University and its Student Government
5	5	and Alumni Associations are visiting Austin to celebrate
6	6	Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is the site of a Caddo Native American
8	8	settlement and a Spanish mission established in 1716; founded by
9	9	Antonio Gil Y'Barbo, it received designation from Spain as a
10	10	pueblo in 1779, and today it proudly calls itself the first town
11	11	in Texas, and it has also been designated the official Garden
12	12	Capital of Texas; and
13	13	WHEREAS, The city became an important gateway for trade
14	14	with the French and later the Americans, and, among a lengthy
15	15	list of Texas milestones, it claims to be home to the state's
16	16	first English-language newspaper, oil well, and two-story
17	17	building, as well as the state's inaugural district court
18	18	session; the nine flags flown over the city include those of
19	19	three short-lived early republics; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Today, the vintage charm of Nacogdoches brings
21	21	myriad tourists, who explore such attractions as the Old Stone
22	22	Fort, the Victorian homes along Mound Street, the 19th-century
23	23	buildings of Millard's Crossing, and the quaint antique shops and
24	24	restaurants along brick downtown streets; many also come to enjoy
25	25	recreational activities at Lake Nacogdoches, Lake Naconiche, and
26	26	Sam Rayburn Reservoir, all known for their bass fishing; in
27	27	addition to tourism, the primary industries of the area include
28	28	agricultural services, manufacturing, and oil and gas; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Education has been an important part of the area's
30	30	economy since Stephen F. Austin State University opened its doors
31	31	to 158 students on September 18, 1923; its alumni association was
32	32	organized just five years later and has worked diligently through
33	33	the years to support the school, which now has an enrollment of
34	34	approximately 13,000 students; the university boasts an
35	35	exceptionally scenic campus recognized for the SFA Gardens and
36	36	also operates a beef and poultry farm, a dairy farm, an
37	37	experimental forest, a forestry field station, and the Waters of
38	38	East Texas Center; its observatory is the second largest not only
39	39	in Texas but also in the Central Time Zone; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Beautifully situated in the Texas Forest Country,
41	41	Nacogdoches is attracting active retired Texans; it was one of
42	42	the first three communities in Texas recognized as a Go Texan
43	43	certified retirement community because of its cultural and
44	44	sporting events, health care, safety, and continuing education
45	45	opportunities; and
46	46	WHEREAS, The combination of numerous amenities and a
47	47	neighborly atmosphere makes Nacogdoches a splendid place to
48	48	live, work, and study, and it is a pleasure to welcome those
49	49	representing the many facets of this vibrant part of the Lone
50	50	Star State; now, therefore, be it
51	51	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
52	52	Legislature, hereby recognize February 18 and 19, 2015, as
53	53	Nacogdoches-SFA Days at the State Capitol and extend to the
54	54	visiting delegation best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
