| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, On February 18, 2015, many proud residents of |

| 3 | 3 | | Athens are gathering in Austin to celebrate Athens Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, First incorporated in 1856, Athens did not begin |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | its steady development until it was reincorporated in 1901; since |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | that time, this charming East Texas town has seen significant |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | growth and the emergence of a dynamic citizenry; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The fertile terrain and temperate climate of the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | area have made Athens a successful agribusiness center; in |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | addition, the city is an outdoorsman's paradise, providing |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | opportunities for scuba diving, picnicking, and many other |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | recreational adventures; Athens boasts a strong claim to being |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the first home of the nation's favorite food, the hamburger, and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the town is known as the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, This delightful city hosts many exciting annual |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | events, including a fiddler's contest, a triathlon, a rodeo, a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | hamburger cook-off, and a business exposition; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Several cultural and tourist attractions grace |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the landscape of the city as well, including the East Texas |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Arboretum, the Henderson County Historical Museum, the Henderson |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | County Performing Arts Center, the Cain Center, the Henderson |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | County Fairpark Complex, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Center, which features aquarium exhibits of every major species |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | of freshwater fish found in Texas; educational opportunities are |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | offered at Trinity Valley Community College; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The seat of Henderson County, this lovely city |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | continues to be one of the Lone Star State's unique assets and is |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | an outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and it is indeed appropriate that the citizens of Athens be given |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | special recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2015, as Athens Day at |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | the State Capitol and join the citizens of Athens in paying |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | tribute to one of Texas' finest communities; and, be it further |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | honor of the City of Athens. |
