11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 204
22 WHEREAS, On February 18, 2015, many proud residents of
33 Athens are gathering in Austin to celebrate Athens Day at the
44 State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, First incorporated in 1856, Athens did not begin
66 its steady development until it was reincorporated in 1901; since
77 that time, this charming East Texas town has seen significant
88 growth and the emergence of a dynamic citizenry; and
99 WHEREAS, The fertile terrain and temperate climate of the
1010 area have made Athens a successful agribusiness center; in
1111 addition, the city is an outdoorsman's paradise, providing
1212 opportunities for scuba diving, picnicking, and many other
1313 recreational adventures; Athens boasts a strong claim to being
1414 the first home of the nation's favorite food, the hamburger, and
1515 the town is known as the Black-Eyed Pea Capital of the World; and
1616 WHEREAS, This delightful city hosts many exciting annual
1717 events, including a fiddler's contest, a triathlon, a rodeo, a
1818 hamburger cook-off, and a business exposition; and
1919 WHEREAS, Several cultural and tourist attractions grace
2020 the landscape of the city as well, including the East Texas
2121 Arboretum, the Henderson County Historical Museum, the Henderson
2222 County Performing Arts Center, the Cain Center, the Henderson
2323 County Fairpark Complex, and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries
2424 Center, which features aquarium exhibits of every major species
2525 of freshwater fish found in Texas; educational opportunities are
2626 offered at Trinity Valley Community College; and
2727 WHEREAS, The seat of Henderson County, this lovely city
2828 continues to be one of the Lone Star State's unique assets and is
2929 an outstanding place in which to live, work, and raise a family,
3030 and it is indeed appropriate that the citizens of Athens be given
3131 special recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3333 Legislature, hereby recognize February 18, 2015, as Athens Day at
3434 the State Capitol and join the citizens of Athens in paying
3535 tribute to one of Texas' finest communities; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3737 honor of the City of Athens.
