1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 213
2	2	WHEREAS, Alumni of Texas A&M University--Kingsville are
3	3	gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on February 26, 2015, to
4	4	celebrate Javelina Day, named in honor of the university's
5	5	beloved mascot; and
6	6	WHEREAS, Established as a teacher's college in 1925, Texas
7	7	A&M University--Kingsville is the oldest continuously operating
8	8	public institution of higher education in South Texas; through
9	9	the years, the school has greatly expanded its educational scope
10	10	to include 7 colleges offering 56 baccalaureate degrees as well
11	11	as 61 master's and 6 doctoral degree programs; it joined The
12	12	Texas A&M University System in 1989, and in 2006, the Texas A&M
13	13	Health Science Center also opened its Rangel College of Pharmacy
14	14	on the 250-acre main Kingsville campus; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Today, the university enrolls more than 8,700
16	16	students from throughout the country and around the world,
17	17	reflecting its commitment to serving individuals of diverse
18	18	cultural, religious, educational, and economic backgrounds; with
19	19	a student population that is 57 percent Hispanic and nearly 19
20	20	percent international, Texas A&M--Kingsville ranks among the top
21	21	schools in the nation for awarding degrees to Latinas and
22	22	Latinos, particularly in the fields of science, technology,
23	23	engineering, and mathematics; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The institution has received well-deserved
25	25	recognition for a host of academic programs, including its
26	26	bilingual postgraduate courses and the 545-acre teaching farm it
27	27	operates for agriculture students; its outstanding environmental
28	28	engineering curriculum has been rated one of the 50 best in the
29	29	country by U.S. News and World Report, and yearly since 2005, the
30	30	Kingsville campus has been placed among the top 100 universities
31	31	in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Javelina men's and women's sports teams further
33	33	reflect the ferocity and tenacity for which the student mascot is
34	34	known; the football team has been especially successful in the
35	35	athletic arena, capturing 7 national championships and 34 Lone
36	36	Star Conference titles since 1931; and
37	37	WHEREAS, For nine decades, Texas A&M
38	38	University--Kingsville has enriched the lives of its students,
39	39	contributed to the advancement of human knowledge, and proved a
40	40	powerful force for social progress and economic development in
41	41	the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
42	42	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
43	43	Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2015, as Javelina Day
44	44	at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
45	45	sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
46	46	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
47	47	prepared for Texas A&M University--Kingsville as an expression
48	48	of high regard from the Texas Senate.
