11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 220
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize February
33 24, 2015, as Viva San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and welcome
44 the visiting delegation from the Alamo City; and
55 WHEREAS, The history of San Antonio can be traced back to
66 1691, when a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came
77 upon a river and named it San Antonio, in honor of Saint Anthony,
88 whose feast day was being celebrated; and
99 WHEREAS, The city was founded in 1718 by Father Antonio
1010 Olivares; he established Mission San Antonio de Valero, which
1111 would become etched in the annals of history in 1836 as the Alamo,
1212 the site where 189 brave individuals held the mission for 13 days
1313 against an army of some 4,000 Mexican soldiers; and
1414 WHEREAS, The cry "Remember the Alamo" became the rallying
1515 point of the Texas Revolution; today, the Alamo is a shrine and
1616 museum and is widely recognized as the cradle of Texas liberty; and
1717 WHEREAS, San Antonio became formally incorporated in 1837,
1818 when the fledgling Republic of Texas granted the city a charter;
1919 the city has since retained its sense of history and tradition
2020 while carefully blending in cosmopolitan progress; it has served
2121 and continues to serve as a crossroads and a meeting place, where
2222 the rich sounds and cultural influences of Native Americans, Old
2323 Mexico, Germans, the Wild West, African Americans, and the Deep
2424 South mingle and merge; and
2525 WHEREAS, Millions of visitors a year delight in the
2626 discovery of San Antonio; in addition to the Alamo, highlights
2727 include La Villita, San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio Missions
2828 Trail, and the famed Paseo del Rio, better known as "The
2929 Riverwalk"; among the other attractions that make San Antonio one
3030 of the top tourist destinations in the country are SeaWorld San
3131 Antonio and the Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park as well as the
3232 PGA Tour Valero Texas Open, the Alamo Bowl, and the five-time
3333 world champion San Antonio Spurs; and
3434 WHEREAS, In April 2015, the city will once again celebrate
3535 Fiesta San Antonio, the biggest 11-day party in the state; first
3636 held 124 years ago, the event was founded by a group of ladies who
3737 decorated horse-drawn carriages for a parade in front of the
3838 Alamo and battled with flower blossoms instead of bullets to
3939 honor the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto; and
4040 WHEREAS, San Antonio is truly one of the treasures of the
4141 Lone Star State, and Viva San Antonio Day provides a welcome
4242 opportunity to honor the city and its many fine residents; now,
4343 therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4545 Legislature, hereby recognize February 24, 2015, as Viva San Antonio
4646 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the members of the visiting
4747 delegation best wishes for an enjoyable visit.
