                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 272
 In Memory
 of
 Ruben H. Edelstein
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
 of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Ruben H. Edelstein, a
 beloved and respected community leader who died July 21, 2014, at
 the age of 96; and
 WHEREAS, Ruben Edelstein was born in Houston in 1918; he
 graduated from Brownsville High School in 1935 and went on to
 earn a bachelor of business administration degree from The
 University of Texas; and
 WHEREAS, He served with distinction in the United States
 Army during World War II and earned the rank of captain; after the
 war, he returned home to head his father's retail furniture
 business, and under his leadership, the enterprise expanded from
 six to fourteen branch stores; and
 WHEREAS, Throughout his life, Mr. Edelstein was dedicated
 to his work on behalf of his community; he helped pioneer the
 United Fund of Brownsville and served as its first chairman, and
 he served as the director of numerous boards, including the
 Brownsville Chamber of Commerce and the Rio Grande Valley Chamber
 of Commerce; he was also a director of the Gladys Porter Zoo and
 was noted for helping to found the Brownsville Public Utilities
 Board; and
 WHEREAS, He served as mayor of the City of Brownsville from
 1975 to 1979, and his many achievements included founding the
 Brownsville Community Health Clinic, the Brownsville Emergency
 Medical Service, and the Urban Bus System; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Edelstein was a devoted husband and shared 57
 years of marriage with Bernice Edelstein; they were blessed with
 two children and three grandchildren; he was beloved by many, and
 he leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by all who
 were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Ruben H. Edelstein; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Ruben Edelstein.
