1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 285
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Brazoria County are gathering
3	3	in Austin to celebrate Brazoria County Day at the State Capitol
4	4	on March 3, 2015; and
5	5	WHEREAS, This section of coastal prairie along the Brazos
6	6	River was inhabited during the first three centuries of Texas'
7	7	recorded history by the nomadic Karankawa Indians; the Spanish
8	8	explorer Cabeza de Vaca passed through the region as early as
9	9	1528, and the pirate Jean Lafitte was rumored to have used the
10	10	mouth of the Brazos as a refuge; and
11	11	WHEREAS, The region was settled in the 1820s by members of
12	12	Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred; Henry Smith of Brazoria
13	13	served as the first American-born governor of the Mexican
14	14	territory of Texas and as a leader of the movement for
15	15	independence, and the town of Columbia served as the capital of
16	16	Texas during the first Texas Congress; in 1836, Brazoria County
17	17	became one of the original counties established by the new
18	18	republic; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Farming and ranching initially constituted the
20	20	mainstays of the county's economy; the discovery of oil and
21	21	sulfur deposits in the early 20th century helped the region grow,
22	22	and chemical processing became increasingly important during
23	23	World War II and after; commercial fishing and the recreation
24	24	industry have helped to ensure continuing economic development; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Today, the 24 cities of Brazoria County boast
26	26	excellent schools and affordable housing; visitors and residents
27	27	alike take great pleasure in miles of sandy beaches, bay and
28	28	offshore fishing, scuba diving, outstanding bird-watching, and
29	29	the Brazoria and San Bernard National Wildlife Refuges; the
30	30	county is also home to many antique shops and scenic parks, one of
31	31	the largest county fairs in Texas, and the Nolan Ryan Center; and
32	32	WHEREAS, The educational opportunities available to
33	33	students at Alvin Community College, Brazosport College, and the
34	34	University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus further
35	35	contribute to the county's many amenities; and
36	36	WHEREAS, The largest chemical complex in North America,
37	37	the Texas Gulf Coast Regional Airport, and a flourishing health
38	38	care industry are among the major contributors to economic growth
39	39	in the county, and Port Freeport, ranked 24th in the United
40	40	States in foreign tonnage, is one of the fastest growing ports on
41	41	the Gulf Coast; and
42	42	WHEREAS, Even as they celebrate their rich heritage, the
43	43	hardworking citizens of Brazoria County are looking ahead to the
44	44	opportunities of the future and continuing to contribute greatly
45	45	to the growth and prosperity of the Lone Star State; now,
46	46	therefore, be it
47	47	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
48	48	Legislature, hereby recognize March 3, 2015, as Brazoria County
49	49	Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
50	50	best wishes for a memorable and meaningful stay in Austin.
