| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas is |

| 3 | 3 | | celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding in 2015; and |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, In response to the growth of the Catholic |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | population in Texas, Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Dallas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | in 1890; Thomas Francis Brennan of Tipperary, Ireland, was |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | appointed as the first bishop over an area that encompassed most |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of North and West Texas; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, the Diocese of Dallas has |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | evolved to accommodate the changing needs of its parishioners, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | with the establishment of such institutions as the Texas Catholic |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | diocesan newspaper, Holy Trinity College, and Saint Paul |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Hospital; in 1902, the Sacred Heart Cathedral was constructed |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | when the congregation outgrew the simple wooden church that had |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | previously served as the seat of the diocese; as the local |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Catholic population continued to increase, the boundaries were |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | redrawn several times to form the Dioceses of El Paso, Amarillo, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Austin, San Angelo, Fort Worth, and Tyler, and today, the Diocese |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | of Dallas covers an area of 7,523 square miles, including Collin, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Dallas, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Rockwall Counties, and it is one of the fastest growing dioceses |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | in the country; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Since 2007, the faithful of the diocese have |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | benefited from the wise and compassionate oversight of Bishop |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Kevin Joseph Farrell, who is leading an effort not only to |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | increase parish support for families and children but also to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | advance work on restoration of the landmark Cathedral Shrine of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the Virgin of Guadalupe; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Countless Texans have looked to the Catholic |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Diocese of Dallas for spiritual guidance over the last 125 years, |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and its member parishes continue to be a positive and vital force |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | in the communities they serve; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas and extend to its parishioners |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | diocese as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
