| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, A number of proud Texans are visiting Austin on |

| 3 | 3 | | March 2, 2015, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1927, with a loan from the Houston |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Public School Board, Texas Southern University opened its doors |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | as Houston Colored Junior College; the school was highly |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | successful and enrollment grew quickly, leading to the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | transition to a four-year institution in 1934, with a graduate |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | program added in 1943; the Texas Legislature appropriated |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | $2 million in 1947 to buy the campus of what was then Houston |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | College for Negroes in order to create a new state-supported |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | university, and four years later the school assumed the name |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Texas Southern University; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, Texas Southern University is one of the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | largest of the historically black colleges and universities in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the United States; located in Houston's Third Ward, it enrolls |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | more than 9,600 students from throughout the country and around |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the world, and it employs some 1,300 faculty and staff; it is |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | composed of 10 schools and colleges that offer 45 baccalaureate |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | academic majors, as well as 29 master's and eight doctoral degree |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | programs; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is committed to serving |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | students of diverse cultural, religious, educational, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | economic backgrounds and to preparing them for future leadership |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | roles; the university trains the majority of African American |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | lawyers in Houston and African American teachers in the Houston |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Independent School District, and it has historically graduated |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | more than 27 percent of the African American pharmacists in the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | United States; in addition, the university's Thurgood Marshall |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | School of Law has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the most diverse law school in the nation; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Texas Southern University |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | has provided its students with a solid foundation for |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | achievement, and it has been a powerful force for social progress |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | and economic development in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 2, 2015, as Texas Southern |

| 40 | 40 | | University Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | associated with this notable institution sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | continued success; and, be it further |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
