11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 291
22 WHEREAS, A number of proud Texans are visiting Austin on
33 March 2, 2015, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the
44 State Capitol; and
55 WHEREAS, Founded in 1927, with a loan from the Houston
66 Public School Board, Texas Southern University opened its doors
77 as Houston Colored Junior College; the school was highly
88 successful and enrollment grew quickly, leading to the
99 transition to a four-year institution in 1934, with a graduate
1010 program added in 1943; the Texas Legislature appropriated
1111 $2 million in 1947 to buy the campus of what was then Houston
1212 College for Negroes in order to create a new state-supported
1313 university, and four years later the school assumed the name
1414 Texas Southern University; and
1515 WHEREAS, Today, Texas Southern University is one of the
1616 largest of the historically black colleges and universities in
1717 the United States; located in Houston's Third Ward, it enrolls
1818 more than 9,600 students from throughout the country and around
1919 the world, and it employs some 1,300 faculty and staff; it is
2020 composed of 10 schools and colleges that offer 45 baccalaureate
2121 academic majors, as well as 29 master's and eight doctoral degree
2222 programs; and
2323 WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is committed to serving
2424 students of diverse cultural, religious, educational, and
2525 economic backgrounds and to preparing them for future leadership
2626 roles; the university trains the majority of African American
2727 lawyers in Houston and African American teachers in the Houston
2828 Independent School District, and it has historically graduated
2929 more than 27 percent of the African American pharmacists in the
3030 United States; in addition, the university's Thurgood Marshall
3131 School of Law has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as
3232 the most diverse law school in the nation; and
3333 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, Texas Southern University
3434 has provided its students with a solid foundation for
3535 achievement, and it has been a powerful force for social progress
3636 and economic development in the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
3737 be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3939 Legislature, hereby recognize March 2, 2015, as Texas Southern
4040 University Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those
4141 associated with this notable institution sincere best wishes for
4242 continued success; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 Texas Southern University as an expression of the high regard of
4545 the Texas Senate.
