1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 295
2	2	WHEREAS, March 2 marks the anniversary of that historic day
3	3	in 1836 when residents of Texas officially declared their
4	4	independence from Mexico, thereby giving birth to the
5	5	independent republic that would stand on its own for more than
6	6	nine years before becoming the 28th state of the Union; and
7	7	WHEREAS, The proud Texans who issued the call for
8	8	independence were members of the Convention of 1836, which met at
9	9	Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 1 of that fateful year; as they
10	10	gathered, the valiant defenders of the Alamo were facing off
11	11	against the troops of Mexican ruler Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna,
12	12	and the Texas revolutionaries had reached a crucial point in
13	13	their campaign for greater political freedom; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Stating the views of the delegates in no uncertain
15	15	terms, the Texas Declaration of Independence listed their
16	16	grievances against the Mexican government and announced their
17	17	bold conclusion: "that the people of Texas do now constitute a
18	18	free, Sovereign, and independent republic, and are fully
19	19	invested with all the rights and attributes which properly belong
20	20	to independent nations"; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Winning that independence on the battlefield
22	22	would take another six weeks and the lives of many brave Texans,
23	23	but with this remarkable proclamation the 59 signatories of the
24	24	Texas Declaration of Independence had enunciated a vision of
25	25	liberty, independence, and just government and charted a
26	26	dramatic new course for the land they called home; now,
27	27	therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
29	29	Legislature, hereby commemorate Texas Independence Day 2015 and
30	30	pay tribute to the immense contributions of those individuals who
31	31	helped found the Republic of Texas.
