| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Victoria County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | in Austin on March 3, 2015, to celebrate Victoria County Day at |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Victoria County is located in southeastern Texas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | on the Gulf Coastal Plains; the area was first colonized by |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Martin de León in 1824, with the establishment of a settlement in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | a Mexican colony named for that nation's first elected president, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Don Guadalupe Victoria; Victoria County was one of the original |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 23 counties established by the First Congress of the Republic of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Texas on March 17, 1836; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, With its abundant natural grasslands and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | subtropical climate allowing for year-round grazing, the county |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | became a leader in the development of the Texas cattle industry; |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | as knowledge about cultivating prairie soils grew, commercial |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | farming of diverse crops developed in the area in the late 1890s, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and the production of corn and cotton grew in importance; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the heart of the Golden Crescent |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | region, the city of Victoria is the county's largest and serves |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | as the county seat; since its humble beginnings in the early |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 1800s, it has become the cultural, historic, and economic hub for |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | nearby communities and the surrounding counties; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | they work together to build a bright future, the citizens of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Victoria County may take justifiable pride in the important role |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | their unique area continues to play in the story of the Lone Star |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | State; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 3, 2015, as Victoria County Day |

| 30 | 30 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere |

| 31 | 31 | | best wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
