| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The observance of Mental Health and Dignity Day on |

| 3 | 3 | | May 3, 2015, provides an important opportunity to heighten |

| 4 | 4 | | understanding of a critical public health issue; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, In 2014, mental health activists in 15 cities |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | across the country introduced Mental Health and Dignity Day to |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | increase awareness about mental health and to work to dispel the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | stigma against mental illness; the event affirms the need to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | support the quest for mental health and draws attention to the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | challenges confronting the many people who experience mental |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | health issues; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mental health problems are common; according to |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the United States Department of Health and Human Services, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | approximately one in five adults experiences a mental health |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | issue each year and one in 20 Americans lives with a serious |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | major depression; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, By participating in this noteworthy event, Texans |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | are contributing to the public dialogue about mental health and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | encouraging their fellow citizens to help end prejudice and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | discrimination against persons who face mental health |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | conditions; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature, hereby recognize May 3, 2015, as National Mental |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Health and Dignity Day and urge all Texans to learn more about |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | mental health. |
