11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 309
22 WHEREAS, The KK125 Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation is
33 dedicated to saving women's lives in Texas and beyond; and
44 WHEREAS, Known as a "silent killer," ovarian cancer has a
55 high mortality rate because it is often diagnosed too late in its
66 progression; the disease rarely causes any symptoms in its early
77 stages, and advanced-stage ovarian cancer may cause few and
88 nonspecific symptoms that are often mistaken for more common,
99 benign conditions; and
1010 WHEREAS, The KK125 Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation was
1111 established in January 2014 to promote the prevention and early
1212 detection of ovarian cancer; it raises funds for research and
1313 educates the public about "compassionate use" of safe but
1414 experimental drugs by terminal patients when traditional
1515 treatments have failed them; and
1616 WHEREAS, Since its inception, the foundation has
1717 contributed $50,000 to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson
1818 Cancer Center for research aimed at improving the CA125 blood
1919 test, a promising diagnostic tool; moreover, it has advocated
2020 powerfully for compassionate use, and it is working with the
2121 American Bar Association to instruct attorneys in ways to assist
2222 terminally ill clients seeking compassionate use access to
2323 treatments; and
2424 WHEREAS, The foundation sponsored a booth at the annual
2525 Texas Conference for Women to share information about ovarian
2626 cancer and engage Texans on a grassroots level; in addition, it
2727 has created a speaker's bureau of volunteers trained to address
2828 civic, social, and professional groups about the foundation's
2929 initiatives; and
3030 WHEREAS, Through its vital endeavors, the KK125 Ovarian
3131 Cancer Research Foundation is raising awareness about a deadly
3232 disease and contributing to the advancement of medical
3333 knowledge, and it is indeed fitting to honor this noteworthy
3434 organization; now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3636 Legislature, hereby commend the work of the KK125 Ovarian Cancer
3737 Research Foundation and call on all Texans to learn more about
3838 ovarian cancer and its detection and treatment; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
4040 organization as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
