2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The KK125 Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation is |

3 | 3 | | dedicated to saving women's lives in Texas and beyond; and |

4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, Known as a "silent killer," ovarian cancer has a |
---|
5 | 5 | | high mortality rate because it is often diagnosed too late in its |
---|
6 | 6 | | progression; the disease rarely causes any symptoms in its early |
---|
7 | 7 | | stages, and advanced-stage ovarian cancer may cause few and |
---|
8 | 8 | | nonspecific symptoms that are often mistaken for more common, |
---|
9 | 9 | | benign conditions; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The KK125 Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation was |
---|
11 | 11 | | established in January 2014 to promote the prevention and early |
---|
12 | 12 | | detection of ovarian cancer; it raises funds for research and |
---|
13 | 13 | | educates the public about "compassionate use" of safe but |
---|
14 | 14 | | experimental drugs by terminal patients when traditional |
---|
15 | 15 | | treatments have failed them; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the foundation has |
---|
17 | 17 | | contributed $50,000 to The University of Texas M. D. Anderson |
---|
18 | 18 | | Cancer Center for research aimed at improving the CA125 blood |
---|
19 | 19 | | test, a promising diagnostic tool; moreover, it has advocated |
---|
20 | 20 | | powerfully for compassionate use, and it is working with the |
---|
21 | 21 | | American Bar Association to instruct attorneys in ways to assist |
---|
22 | 22 | | terminally ill clients seeking compassionate use access to |
---|
23 | 23 | | treatments; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The foundation sponsored a booth at the annual |
---|
25 | 25 | | Texas Conference for Women to share information about ovarian |
---|
26 | 26 | | cancer and engage Texans on a grassroots level; in addition, it |
---|
27 | 27 | | has created a speaker's bureau of volunteers trained to address |
---|
28 | 28 | | civic, social, and professional groups about the foundation's |
---|
29 | 29 | | initiatives; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Through its vital endeavors, the KK125 Ovarian |
---|
31 | 31 | | Cancer Research Foundation is raising awareness about a deadly |
---|
32 | 32 | | disease and contributing to the advancement of medical |
---|
33 | 33 | | knowledge, and it is indeed fitting to honor this noteworthy |
---|
34 | 34 | | organization; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature, hereby commend the work of the KK125 Ovarian Cancer |
---|
37 | 37 | | Research Foundation and call on all Texans to learn more about |
---|
38 | 38 | | ovarian cancer and its detection and treatment; and, be it further |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the |

40 | 40 | | organization as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
