6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Tech University System, governed by a |
---|
7 | 7 | | nine-member Board of Regents and Chancellor Robert L. Duncan, |
---|
8 | 8 | | consists of Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health |
---|
9 | 9 | | Sciences Center, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech |
---|
10 | 10 | | University Health Sciences Center at El Paso; the system is a |
---|
11 | 11 | | $1.7 billion enterprise that currently educates nearly 47,000 |
---|
12 | 12 | | students, conducts a wide range of studies with more than |
---|
13 | 13 | | $200 million in research expenditures annually, and counts |
---|
14 | 14 | | approximately 290,000 alumni; the system also has an endowment of |
---|
15 | 15 | | more than $1 billion and some 17,000 faculty and staff members |
---|
16 | 16 | | who are focused on advancing higher education, health care, |
---|
17 | 17 | | research, and outreach across the state; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Each component of the system provides innovative |
---|
19 | 19 | | educational and research opportunities; Texas Tech University is |
---|
20 | 20 | | a major comprehensive research university, led by President |
---|
21 | 21 | | M. Duane Nellis; enrolling more than 35,000 students in 10 |
---|
22 | 22 | | colleges and two schools, Texas Tech University has set a new |
---|
23 | 23 | | fall enrollment record for the past eight years, increasing 25 |
---|
24 | 24 | | percent since 2007; with the goal of being one of the nation's |
---|
25 | 25 | | premier research institutions, the university had more than |
---|
26 | 26 | | $153 million in total research expenditures in 2014; additionally, |
---|
27 | 27 | | 10 faculty members were awarded grants from the Fulbright United |
---|
28 | 28 | | States Scholar Program in 2013, the most of any research |
---|
29 | 29 | | university in the nation; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is |
---|
31 | 31 | | composed of five schools in various health care disciplines, |
---|
32 | 32 | | including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health sciences, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and biomedical sciences, and has trained more than 20,000 health |
---|
34 | 34 | | care professionals; overseen by Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell, the health |
---|
35 | 35 | | sciences center enrolls more than 4,500 students and has tripled |
---|
36 | 36 | | its research expenditures over the past five years with |
---|
37 | 37 | | significant studies underway in areas such as aging, cancer, |
---|
38 | 38 | | reproduction, and genetic diseases; the university also |
---|
39 | 39 | | graduates more health care professionals than any other |
---|
40 | 40 | | health-related institution in Texas and meets the health care |
---|
41 | 41 | | needs of more than 2.5 million people who live throughout a vast |
---|
42 | 42 | | 108-county area; and |
---|
43 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Angelo State University, which joined the system |
---|
44 | 44 | | in 2007, currently enrolls nearly 6,500 students in five colleges |
---|
45 | 45 | | and is directed by President Brian J. May; Angelo State |
---|
46 | 46 | | University was the first university in the state to offer a |
---|
47 | 47 | | degree in computer science and has been named to the Princeton |
---|
48 | 48 | | Review's "Best Colleges" list for the past six consecutive years; |
---|
49 | 49 | | unique to Angelo State University, its Carr Scholarship program |
---|
50 | 50 | | is funded by one of the largest endowments at a regional |
---|
51 | 51 | | university in the United States, thus making scholarships |
---|
52 | 52 | | possible for one of every five of its students; and |
---|
53 | 53 | | WHEREAS, As the fourth and newest member of the system, |
---|
54 | 54 | | Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso became a |
---|
55 | 55 | | comprehensive health-related institution in 2013 and includes |
---|
56 | 56 | | the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Greve Hunt |
---|
57 | 57 | | School of Nursing, and a regional Graduate School of Biomedical |
---|
58 | 58 | | Sciences; headed by Dr. Richard A. Lange, the university |
---|
59 | 59 | | enrolled nearly 500 students, is home to the first medical school |
---|
60 | 60 | | on the nation's southern border, and conducts important research |
---|
61 | 61 | | focused on cancer, diabetes and obesity, infectious diseases, |
---|
62 | 62 | | and neurosciences; and |
---|
63 | 63 | | WHEREAS, Through its missions, the Texas Tech University |
---|
64 | 64 | | System and its four component institutions continue to better the |
---|
65 | 65 | | higher education and health care landscapes, and in so doing, the |
---|
66 | 66 | | system has contributed to the remarkable achievements of the |
---|
67 | 67 | | state as a whole; now, therefore, be it |
---|
68 | 68 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
69 | 69 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2015, as Texas Tech |
---|
70 | 70 | | University System Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |
---|
71 | 71 | | welcome to all those from the system who are visiting on this day. |
