11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 310
22 WHEREAS, Distinguished representatives of the Texas Tech
33 University System are gathering at the State Capitol on March 4,
44 2015, to celebrate the system's vital role in the Lone Star
55 State; and
66 WHEREAS, The Texas Tech University System, governed by a
77 nine-member Board of Regents and Chancellor Robert L. Duncan,
88 consists of Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health
99 Sciences Center, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech
1010 University Health Sciences Center at El Paso; the system is a
1111 $1.7 billion enterprise that currently educates nearly 47,000
1212 students, conducts a wide range of studies with more than
1313 $200 million in research expenditures annually, and counts
1414 approximately 290,000 alumni; the system also has an endowment of
1515 more than $1 billion and some 17,000 faculty and staff members
1616 who are focused on advancing higher education, health care,
1717 research, and outreach across the state; and
1818 WHEREAS, Each component of the system provides innovative
1919 educational and research opportunities; Texas Tech University is
2020 a major comprehensive research university, led by President
2121 M. Duane Nellis; enrolling more than 35,000 students in 10
2222 colleges and two schools, Texas Tech University has set a new
2323 fall enrollment record for the past eight years, increasing 25
2424 percent since 2007; with the goal of being one of the nation's
2525 premier research institutions, the university had more than
2626 $153 million in total research expenditures in 2014; additionally,
2727 10 faculty members were awarded grants from the Fulbright United
2828 States Scholar Program in 2013, the most of any research
2929 university in the nation; and
3030 WHEREAS, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is
3131 composed of five schools in various health care disciplines,
3232 including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health sciences,
3333 and biomedical sciences, and has trained more than 20,000 health
3434 care professionals; overseen by Dr. Tedd L. Mitchell, the health
3535 sciences center enrolls more than 4,500 students and has tripled
3636 its research expenditures over the past five years with
3737 significant studies underway in areas such as aging, cancer,
3838 reproduction, and genetic diseases; the university also
3939 graduates more health care professionals than any other
4040 health-related institution in Texas and meets the health care
4141 needs of more than 2.5 million people who live throughout a vast
4242 108-county area; and
4343 WHEREAS, Angelo State University, which joined the system
4444 in 2007, currently enrolls nearly 6,500 students in five colleges
4545 and is directed by President Brian J. May; Angelo State
4646 University was the first university in the state to offer a
4747 degree in computer science and has been named to the Princeton
4848 Review's "Best Colleges" list for the past six consecutive years;
4949 unique to Angelo State University, its Carr Scholarship program
5050 is funded by one of the largest endowments at a regional
5151 university in the United States, thus making scholarships
5252 possible for one of every five of its students; and
5353 WHEREAS, As the fourth and newest member of the system,
5454 Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso became a
5555 comprehensive health-related institution in 2013 and includes
5656 the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Greve Hunt
5757 School of Nursing, and a regional Graduate School of Biomedical
5858 Sciences; headed by Dr. Richard A. Lange, the university
5959 enrolled nearly 500 students, is home to the first medical school
6060 on the nation's southern border, and conducts important research
6161 focused on cancer, diabetes and obesity, infectious diseases,
6262 and neurosciences; and
6363 WHEREAS, Through its missions, the Texas Tech University
6464 System and its four component institutions continue to better the
6565 higher education and health care landscapes, and in so doing, the
6666 system has contributed to the remarkable achievements of the
6767 state as a whole; now, therefore, be it
6868 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
6969 Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2015, as Texas Tech
7070 University System Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm
7171 welcome to all those from the system who are visiting on this day.
