| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Wilbarger County are gathering |

| 3 | 3 | | to celebrate Wilbarger County and City of Vernon Day at the State |

| 4 | 4 | | Capitol on March 4, 2015; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Situated upon the rolling grasslands of North |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas, Wilbarger County was once part of the buffalo hunting |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | grounds of the Comanche; named for early settlers Josiah and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Mathias Wilbarger, the county was established in 1858; a branch |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | of the Western Trail passed through the area, and six million |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | longhorns traversed the Red River at Doan's Crossing during the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | great cattle drives; oil, discovered in the early 20th century, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | remains important to the region's economy; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Vernon, the county seat, was originally called Eagle |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Flat for the abundance of nesting eagles nearby; today, the city is |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | a center for farming, ranching, and the petroleum industry; the town |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | is the birthplace of rock and roll legend Roy Orbison and is also |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | home to Vernon College and the Red River Valley Museum, which |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | chronicles the history, culture, and geography of the region; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Waggoner Ranch south of Vernon was |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | established in 1849 and is the largest ranch in Texas under one |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | fence and a five-time winner of the Texas Ranch Roundup; the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Santa Rosa Palomino Club is a renowned precision equestrian |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | riding club, and the club's annual Santa Rosa Roundup draws |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | thousands of visitors and top professional rodeo riders; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | residents and visitors alike also enjoy the picnic every May at |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Doan's Crossing, one of the oldest annual events in Texas; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich and colorful history as |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | they work together to build a bright future, the citizens of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Vernon and Wilbarger County may take justifiable pride in the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | important role their unique region continues to play in the story |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 2015, as Wilbarger County |

| 34 | 34 | | and City of Vernon Day at the State Capitol and extend to the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a memorable and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | meaningful visit to Austin. |
