44 Charles Martinez, Jr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
66 of Bay City in mourning the loss of civic leader Charles Martinez
77 Jr., who died August 15, 2014, at the age of 86; and
88 WHEREAS, Charles Martinez Jr. was born on October 17, 1927,
99 in Bay City, to Charles Martinez Sr. and Annie Moralez Martinez;
1010 after graduating from Bay City High School in 1945, he served the
1111 nation as a member of the United States Army in Korea; and
1212 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, Mary Louise Martinez,
1313 raised four children together and were blessed with six
1414 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez worked as a printer for the Daily
1616 Tribune for more than a decade before beginning a 28-year career
1717 with the United States Postal Service; he later worked as a real
1818 estate broker with Thompson Land Company; and
1919 WHEREAS, He served the Bay City community as a volunteer
2020 and a leader for various civic organizations and as an elected
2121 official; known as the "People's Mayor" during his term in
2222 office, he played an important role in improving the quality of
2323 life for the city's residents; and
2424 WHEREAS, His volunteer efforts included work with Our Lady
2525 of Guadalupe Church, the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, and the
2626 United Way; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3070, the
2727 Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2438, the Bay City Booster Club,
2828 and the Matagorda County Board of Realtors; the many honors he
2929 received for his extensive contributions to the community
3030 included the Headquarters Bicentennial Branch Award and the
3131 title of Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year; and
3232 WHEREAS, A man of strength, integrity, and compassion, he
3333 gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom and valued counsel
3434 will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his
3535 life; and
3636 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3737 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3838 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4040 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4141 family of Charles Martinez Jr.; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4343 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4444 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4545 memory of Charles Martinez Jr.
