5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens |
---|
6 | 6 | | of Bay City in mourning the loss of civic leader Charles Martinez |
---|
7 | 7 | | Jr., who died August 15, 2014, at the age of 86; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Charles Martinez Jr. was born on October 17, 1927, |
---|
9 | 9 | | in Bay City, to Charles Martinez Sr. and Annie Moralez Martinez; |
---|
10 | 10 | | after graduating from Bay City High School in 1945, he served the |
---|
11 | 11 | | nation as a member of the United States Army in Korea; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, Mary Louise Martinez, |
---|
13 | 13 | | raised four children together and were blessed with six |
---|
14 | 14 | | grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez worked as a printer for the Daily |
---|
16 | 16 | | Tribune for more than a decade before beginning a 28-year career |
---|
17 | 17 | | with the United States Postal Service; he later worked as a real |
---|
18 | 18 | | estate broker with Thompson Land Company; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, He served the Bay City community as a volunteer |
---|
20 | 20 | | and a leader for various civic organizations and as an elected |
---|
21 | 21 | | official; known as the "People's Mayor" during his term in |
---|
22 | 22 | | office, he played an important role in improving the quality of |
---|
23 | 23 | | life for the city's residents; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, His volunteer efforts included work with Our Lady |
---|
25 | 25 | | of Guadalupe Church, the Bay City Chamber of Commerce, and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | United Way; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus 3070, the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2438, the Bay City Booster Club, |
---|
28 | 28 | | and the Matagorda County Board of Realtors; the many honors he |
---|
29 | 29 | | received for his extensive contributions to the community |
---|
30 | 30 | | included the Headquarters Bicentennial Branch Award and the |
---|
31 | 31 | | title of Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A man of strength, integrity, and compassion, he |
---|
33 | 33 | | gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom and valued counsel |
---|
34 | 34 | | will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his |
---|
35 | 35 | | life; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
---|
37 | 37 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
---|
38 | 38 | | forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
---|
41 | 41 | | family of Charles Martinez Jr.; and, be it further |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
---|
43 | 43 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
---|
45 | 45 | | memory of Charles Martinez Jr. |
