11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 322
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize Mrs. Marguerite Smith Latson on the grand occasion of
44 her 80th birthday; and
55 WHEREAS, Marguerite Smith was born to Hattie Bell Smith and
66 Charlie Perry Smith; she grew up in Houston's historic Fifth Ward
77 and graduated with honors from Phillis Wheatley High School in
88 1953; and
99 WHEREAS, After her graduation, she met and married Ezekiel
1010 "Zeak" Latson; the couple was blessed with 13 children of their
1111 own and later took in her sister's four daughters to raise; and
1212 WHEREAS, Committed to the principle that education
1313 should be a top priority in life, Mrs. Latson took a vital
1414 interest in her children's school activities and made sure she
1515 attended every program and event in which they took part; she
1616 was the first African American to serve on the Houston
1717 Independent School District's Parental Advisory Board; she
1818 proudly watched each of her children graduate from high school
1919 and attend college, and she has been blessed with
2020 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
2121 WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practices her faith in her
2222 daily life, she is a longtime, devoted member of Bringhurst Street
2323 Good News Church, which named her Mother of the Year in 1982 and
2424 1997 and later bestowed on her the title of Church Mother; and
2525 WHEREAS, She is respected and admired throughout her Fifth
2626 Ward community for her tireless work as a mentor and guide to
2727 children of the Hutton Street neighborhood; she is noted for her
2828 courage and her compassion for others, and her enthusiasm for
2929 living each day to the fullest is an inspiration to all who know
3030 her; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
3232 Legislature, hereby commend Mrs. Marguerite Smith Latson on her
3333 many achievements and extend to her best wishes for a memorable
3434 80th birthday celebration; and, be it further
3535 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3636 her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
