| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Mrs. Marguerite Smith Latson on the grand occasion of |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | her 80th birthday; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Smith was born to Hattie Bell Smith and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Charlie Perry Smith; she grew up in Houston's historic Fifth Ward |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and graduated with honors from Phillis Wheatley High School in |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 1953; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, After her graduation, she met and married Ezekiel |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | "Zeak" Latson; the couple was blessed with 13 children of their |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | own and later took in her sister's four daughters to raise; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Committed to the principle that education |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | should be a top priority in life, Mrs. Latson took a vital |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | interest in her children's school activities and made sure she |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | attended every program and event in which they took part; she |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | was the first African American to serve on the Houston |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Independent School District's Parental Advisory Board; she |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | proudly watched each of her children graduate from high school |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and attend college, and she has been blessed with |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practices her faith in her |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | daily life, she is a longtime, devoted member of Bringhurst Street |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Good News Church, which named her Mother of the Year in 1982 and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 1997 and later bestowed on her the title of Church Mother; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, She is respected and admired throughout her Fifth |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Ward community for her tireless work as a mentor and guide to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | children of the Hutton Street neighborhood; she is noted for her |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | courage and her compassion for others, and her enthusiasm for |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | living each day to the fullest is an inspiration to all who know |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | her; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature, hereby commend Mrs. Marguerite Smith Latson on her |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | many achievements and extend to her best wishes for a memorable |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | 80th birthday celebration; and, be it further |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
