1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 333
2	2	WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Corsicana and Navarro County
3	3	are coming together in Austin on March 10, 2015, to celebrate
4	4	Corsicana and Navarro County Day at the State Capitol; and
5	5	WHEREAS, This region of rolling blackland prairie was once
6	6	inhabited by the Ione, Kickapoo, and Comanche, and early
7	7	Anglo-American settlers built a fort on the Navasota River in
8	8	1833; Navarro County was officially organized in 1846 and named
9	9	for Jose Antonio Navarro, a hero of the Texas Revolution; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Corsicana was founded in 1848 as the county seat
11	11	and named after the island of Corsica, the birthplace of
12	12	Mr. Navarro's parents; the arrival of the railroad after the
13	13	Civil War helped Corsicana to become the region's leading center
14	14	for the trading and shipping of cotton, grain, wool, and hides; and
15	15	WHEREAS, In 1894, drillers seeking more water for
16	16	Corsicana's growing population struck oil and gas instead,
17	17	leading to the first oil boom and the longest continual flow of
18	18	oil in Texas; since that initial strike, more than 200 million
19	19	barrels of oil have been produced in the county; and
20	20	WHEREAS, Today, Navarro County's multifaceted economy
21	21	revolves around advanced manufacturing, information technology,
22	22	the oil and gas industries, and agriculture, primarily the
23	23	production of cattle, cotton, sorghum, corn, and wheat; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Corsicana is known far and wide for its DeLuxe
25	25	Fruitcake, a creation of the 119-year-old Collin Street Bakery;
26	26	the town is also home to the Navarro Pecan Company, the largest
27	27	pecan-shelling facility in the world; a Russell Stover candy
28	28	factory; Oil City Iron Works, a foundry established in 1866 that
29	29	produces industrial parts and equipment, with over 7,000 active
30	30	patterns; and Corsicana Bedding, Incorporated, which was founded
31	31	in 1971 as Tipton Manufacturing and is still leading the
32	32	industry, having become one of the most solid bedding
33	33	manufacturers in the nation; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Notable attractions in Corsicana include the
35	35	Lefty Frizzell Country Music Museum, the restored Palace
36	36	Theatre, and Pioneer Village, a re-creation of a 19th-century
37	37	Texas town; in addition, Navarro College boasts the Cook Center
38	38	Planetarium, the largest domed theater in Texas, and the Pearce
39	39	Museum, which contains extensive collections of Civil War
40	40	documents and Western art; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Residents and visitors alike enjoy abundant
42	42	opportunities for boating, fishing, waterskiing, and other such
43	43	pastimes, thanks to the proximity of Richland-Chambers
44	44	Reservoir, Navarro Mills Lake, and Lake Halbert; and
45	45	WHEREAS, Honoring their rich heritage even as they embrace
46	46	thechallengesandopportunitiesofthefuture,thecitizensof
47	47	Corsicana and Navarro County may indeed take pride in the vital
48	48	role their community has played in the story of the Lone Star
49	49	State; now, therefore, be it
50	50	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
51	51	Legislature, hereby recognize March 10, 2015, as Corsicana and
52	52	Navarro County Day at the State Capitol and extend to the
53	53	visiting delegation best wishes for a meaningful and memorable
54	54	stay in Austin; and, be it further
55	55	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
56	56	honor of this special day.
