55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Colonel Wayne Bert Sorensen, United
77 States Army, Retired, who died February 18, 2015, at the age of
88 72; and
99 WHEREAS, Wayne Sorensen was born on September 15, 1942, in
1010 Saint Paul, Minnesota, to Violet and Bert Sorensen; he earned a
1111 degree in business administration from the University of
1212 Minnesota; and
1313 WHEREAS, He served the nation with distinction for more
1414 than two decades as a member of the United States Army; he
1515 enlisted as a Medical Service Corps officer, and his overseas
1616 tours of duty included Vietnam, Germany, and Korea; and
1717 WHEREAS, During his tenure in the military, he earned a
1818 master's degree in health care administration from Baylor
1919 University and a doctorate from the University of Iowa; he rose
2020 to the rank of colonel, and his last assignment in the army was as
2121 executive officer to the chief of Clinical Services, 7th Medical
2222 Command, Heidelberg, Germany; and
2323 WHEREAS, After his retirement in 1992, he began a second
2424 career as a consultant and university professor; he worked for a
2525 number of health care organizations and programs and served as a
2626 member of the Health Care Administration faculty at Texas State
2727 University; he served as department chair and made numerous
2828 overseas trips representing the university on assistance visits
2929 to several eastern European countries; and
3030 WHEREAS, Dr. Sorensen was recruited in 2010 to serve as the
3131 first director of Health Care Administration for Concordia
3232 University in Austin; through the years, he was active in a
3333 number of professional and philanthropic organizations, most
3434 notably the Down Home Ranch in Elgin; and
3535 WHEREAS, He was a man of courage, strength, and compassion
3636 who gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued
3737 counsel will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to
3838 share in his life; and
3939 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
4040 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
4141 forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4343 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4444 family of Colonel Wayne Bert Sorensen; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4646 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4747 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4848 memory of Wayne Bert Sorensen.
