11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 339
22 WHEREAS, Proud area residents are joining together to
33 celebrate Austin County Day at the State Capitol on March 31,
44 2015, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to
55 recognize the county's unique contribution to the story of the
66 Lone Star State; and
77 WHEREAS, American settlement in the county dates to the
88 early 1820s, when the area became part of Stephen F. Austin's
99 first colony; the first town to be established was San Felipe de
1010 Austin, which served as the administrative seat of the colony and
1111 as a social, cultural, and commercial center; and
1212 WHEREAS, Austin County was created by the Constitution of
1313 1836 and was formally organized by 1837; San Felipe was the
1414 county seat until 1848, when the county government was moved to
1515 Bellville; and
1616 WHEREAS, Blessed with an abundance of water, grassland,
1717 and forests, the county drew a steady stream of settlers, most of
1818 whom were engaged in agriculture; a number of towns grew
1919 substantially during the 19th century, including Bellville and
2020 Wallis and the railroad towns of Sealy and Kenney; and
2121 WHEREAS, During the 1800s, German and Czech immigrants
2222 began arriving in Austin County in appreciable numbers, and
2323 their influence is felt throughout the region in the societies
2424 that they established and the many communities that they
2525 founded; the cultural mosaic of the county has been further
2626 enriched by immigrants from Mexico, the largest foreign-born
2727 group to settle there in the 20th century, and by African
2828 Americans, who played a fundamental role in the county's
2929 development and in the creation of numerous social and
3030 religious institutions; and
3131 WHEREAS, Among the prominent Texans who have resided in
3232 Austin County was Gail Borden Jr., a surveyor and newspaper
3333 publisher who later invented a successful process for
3434 condensing milk; another early citizen, Robert Justus Kleberg,
3535 fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and held several
3636 prestigious public offices; and
3737 WHEREAS, Today, visitors and residents alike can explore
3838 the county's rich heritage, preserved at the San Felipe de
3939 Austin State Historic Site and in rural communities throughout
4040 the area, and they enjoy hunting and fishing opportunities as
4141 well as a wealth of special recreational events; and
4242 WHEREAS, The citizens of Austin County have together
4343 built a vibrant and distinctive corner of Texas, and they may
4444 indeed take pride in their notable history as they look forward
4545 to a future filled with promise; now, therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4747 Legislature, hereby recognize March 31, 2015, as Austin County
4848 Day and extend to the visiting delegation a warm welcome to the
4949 State Capitol.
