2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud area residents are joining together to |

3 | 3 | | celebrate Austin County Day at the State Capitol on March 31, |
---|
4 | 4 | | 2015, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to |
---|
5 | 5 | | recognize the county's unique contribution to the story of the |
---|
6 | 6 | | Lone Star State; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, American settlement in the county dates to the |
---|
8 | 8 | | early 1820s, when the area became part of Stephen F. Austin's |
---|
9 | 9 | | first colony; the first town to be established was San Felipe de |
---|
10 | 10 | | Austin, which served as the administrative seat of the colony and |
---|
11 | 11 | | as a social, cultural, and commercial center; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Austin County was created by the Constitution of |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1836 and was formally organized by 1837; San Felipe was the |
---|
14 | 14 | | county seat until 1848, when the county government was moved to |
---|
15 | 15 | | Bellville; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with an abundance of water, grassland, |
---|
17 | 17 | | and forests, the county drew a steady stream of settlers, most of |
---|
18 | 18 | | whom were engaged in agriculture; a number of towns grew |
---|
19 | 19 | | substantially during the 19th century, including Bellville and |
---|
20 | 20 | | Wallis and the railroad towns of Sealy and Kenney; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, During the 1800s, German and Czech immigrants |
---|
22 | 22 | | began arriving in Austin County in appreciable numbers, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | their influence is felt throughout the region in the societies |
---|
24 | 24 | | that they established and the many communities that they |
---|
25 | 25 | | founded; the cultural mosaic of the county has been further |
---|
26 | 26 | | enriched by immigrants from Mexico, the largest foreign-born |
---|
27 | 27 | | group to settle there in the 20th century, and by African |
---|
28 | 28 | | Americans, who played a fundamental role in the county's |
---|
29 | 29 | | development and in the creation of numerous social and |
---|
30 | 30 | | religious institutions; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Among the prominent Texans who have resided in |
---|
32 | 32 | | Austin County was Gail Borden Jr., a surveyor and newspaper |
---|
33 | 33 | | publisher who later invented a successful process for |
---|
34 | 34 | | condensing milk; another early citizen, Robert Justus Kleberg, |
---|
35 | 35 | | fought in the Battle of San Jacinto and held several |
---|
36 | 36 | | prestigious public offices; and |
---|
37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Today, visitors and residents alike can explore |
---|
38 | 38 | | the county's rich heritage, preserved at the San Felipe de |
---|
39 | 39 | | Austin State Historic Site and in rural communities throughout |
---|
40 | 40 | | the area, and they enjoy hunting and fishing opportunities as |
---|
41 | 41 | | well as a wealth of special recreational events; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Austin County have together |
---|
43 | 43 | | built a vibrant and distinctive corner of Texas, and they may |
---|
44 | 44 | | indeed take pride in their notable history as they look forward |
---|
45 | 45 | | to a future filled with promise; now, therefore, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
---|
47 | 47 | | Legislature, hereby recognize March 31, 2015, as Austin County |
---|
48 | 48 | | Day and extend to the visiting delegation a warm welcome to the |
---|
49 | 49 | | State Capitol. |
