| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Linda Bridges, who died January 13, |

| 7 | 7 | | 2015, at the age of 65; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Linda Bridges was an exemplary educator and union |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | leader whose commitment to Texas schools had a profound impact on |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the lives of countless students and teachers across the state; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, She began her career in education as an elementary |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | special education teacher in the Corpus Christi Independent |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | School District; she was a charter member of the Corpus Christi |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | American Federation of Teachers and served as the local union's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | president for 24 years; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, She became president of the Texas Chapter of the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | American Federation of Teachers in 2005; under her leadership, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the union's membership increased from 48,000 to more than 65,000, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and she is credited with developing the process of elected |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | consultation, through which organizations in right-to-work states |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | can negotiate for better wages, benefits, and working |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | conditions; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | gave generously to others, and her unshakeable belief in the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | power of education and her enthusiasm for living each day to the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | share in her life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | family and friends of Linda Bridges; and, be it further |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | memory of Linda Bridges. |
