2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, In 2015, the Honorable Sam Johnson, a member of |

3 | 3 | | the United States House of Representatives, is commemorating the |
---|
4 | 4 | | 42nd anniversary of his release as a prisoner of war in North |
---|
5 | 5 | | Vietnam; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, An alumnus of Woodrow Wilson High School in |
---|
7 | 7 | | Dallas, Sam Johnson graduated with a degree in business |
---|
8 | 8 | | administration from Southern Methodist University in 1951, and |
---|
9 | 9 | | soon thereafter, at the age of 20, he entered the United States |
---|
10 | 10 | | Air Force; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson completed 62 combat missions as a |
---|
12 | 12 | | fighter pilot during the Korean War, and he went on to become a |
---|
13 | 13 | | member of the elite Air Force Thunderbirds and the director of |
---|
14 | 14 | | the Air Force Fighter Weapons School; he later served two tours |
---|
15 | 15 | | of duty in the Vietnam War; on April 16, 1966, he was flying his |
---|
16 | 16 | | 25th combat mission over North Vietnam when his plane was shot |
---|
17 | 17 | | down, forcing him to eject into enemy territory; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Severely injured, Major Johnson was taken captive |
---|
19 | 19 | | and held at the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" prison camp, where he was |
---|
20 | 20 | | subjected to horrific beatings, starvation, solitary confinement, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and other deplorable treatment; he ultimately endured seven |
---|
22 | 22 | | years in the facility before being returned to his homeland on |
---|
23 | 23 | | February 17, 1973, and he later chronicled his experiences in his |
---|
24 | 24 | | autobiography, Captive Warriors: A Vietnam POW's Story, which |
---|
25 | 25 | | was published in 1992; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Congressman Johnson concluded his exemplary |
---|
27 | 27 | | 29-year career in the United States Air Force in 1979, retiring |
---|
28 | 28 | | at the rank of colonel; his numerous military commendations and |
---|
29 | 29 | | accolades include two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple |
---|
31 | 31 | | Hearts, four Air Medals, and three Outstanding Unit Awards; |
---|
32 | 32 | | moreover, he was retroactively awarded the Prisoner of War Medal |
---|
33 | 33 | | following its creation in 1985; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, this esteemed |
---|
35 | 35 | | Texan founded a home-building business, and in 1984 he was |
---|
36 | 36 | | elected to the first of four consecutive terms in the Texas House |
---|
37 | 37 | | of Representatives; since 1991, he has represented the Third |
---|
38 | 38 | | District of Texas in the United States Congress, where he serves |
---|
39 | 39 | | on the Committee on Ways and Means and the Health Subcommittee |
---|
40 | 40 | | and chairs the Social Security Subcommittee; throughout his |
---|
41 | 41 | | career in Congress, he has made the welfare of the men and women |
---|
42 | 42 | | in the military one of his foremost priorities; in 2009, he was |
---|
43 | 43 | | awarded the National Patriots Award, the highest civilian |
---|
44 | 44 | | accolade conferred by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, |
---|
45 | 45 | | and he was named by his peers as the "most admired" Republican in |
---|
46 | 46 | | the United States House of Representatives; and |

47 | 47 | | WHEREAS, Congressman Johnson and his wife, Shirley, are |
---|
48 | 48 | | the parents of 3 children, Gini, Beverly, and the late Bob |

49 | 49 | | Johnson, and the grandparents of 10 grandchildren; and |

50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Sam Johnson has demonstrated the highest degree |

51 | 51 | | of patriotism, fighting bravely for his country, holding |
---|
52 | 52 | | steadfast in captivity, and rendering public service with the |
---|
53 | 53 | | utmost integrity, and he is indeed deserving of his fellow |
---|
54 | 54 | | citizens' deepest gratitude; now, therefore, be it |

55 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
