11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 359
22 WHEREAS, In 2015, the Honorable Sam Johnson, a member of
33 the United States House of Representatives, is commemorating the
44 42nd anniversary of his release as a prisoner of war in North
55 Vietnam; and
66 WHEREAS, An alumnus of Woodrow Wilson High School in
77 Dallas, Sam Johnson graduated with a degree in business
88 administration from Southern Methodist University in 1951, and
99 soon thereafter, at the age of 20, he entered the United States
1010 Air Force; and
1111 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson completed 62 combat missions as a
1212 fighter pilot during the Korean War, and he went on to become a
1313 member of the elite Air Force Thunderbirds and the director of
1414 the Air Force Fighter Weapons School; he later served two tours
1515 of duty in the Vietnam War; on April 16, 1966, he was flying his
1616 25th combat mission over North Vietnam when his plane was shot
1717 down, forcing him to eject into enemy territory; and
1818 WHEREAS, Severely injured, Major Johnson was taken captive
1919 and held at the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" prison camp, where he was
2020 subjected to horrific beatings, starvation, solitary confinement,
2121 and other deplorable treatment; he ultimately endured seven
2222 years in the facility before being returned to his homeland on
2323 February 17, 1973, and he later chronicled his experiences in his
2424 autobiography, Captive Warriors: A Vietnam POW's Story, which
2525 was published in 1992; and
2626 WHEREAS, Congressman Johnson concluded his exemplary
2727 29-year career in the United States Air Force in 1979, retiring
2828 at the rank of colonel; his numerous military commendations and
2929 accolades include two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the
3030 Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple
3131 Hearts, four Air Medals, and three Outstanding Unit Awards;
3232 moreover, he was retroactively awarded the Prisoner of War Medal
3333 following its creation in 1985; and
3434 WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, this esteemed
3535 Texan founded a home-building business, and in 1984 he was
3636 elected to the first of four consecutive terms in the Texas House
3737 of Representatives; since 1991, he has represented the Third
3838 District of Texas in the United States Congress, where he serves
3939 on the Committee on Ways and Means and the Health Subcommittee
4040 and chairs the Social Security Subcommittee; throughout his
4141 career in Congress, he has made the welfare of the men and women
4242 in the military one of his foremost priorities; in 2009, he was
4343 awarded the National Patriots Award, the highest civilian
4444 accolade conferred by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society,
4545 and he was named by his peers as the "most admired" Republican in
4646 the United States House of Representatives; and
4747 WHEREAS, Congressman Johnson and his wife, Shirley, are
4848 the parents of 3 children, Gini, Beverly, and the late Bob
4949 Johnson, and the grandparents of 10 grandchildren; and
5050 WHEREAS, Sam Johnson has demonstrated the highest degree
5151 of patriotism, fighting bravely for his country, holding
5252 steadfast in captivity, and rendering public service with the
5353 utmost integrity, and he is indeed deserving of his fellow
5454 citizens' deepest gratitude; now, therefore, be it
5555 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
5656 Legislature,herebyhonorCongressmanSamJohnsononthe42nd
5757 anniversary of his return from Vietnam and extend to him sincere
5858 appreciation for his valiant service to his country; and, be it further
5959 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
6060 prepared for Congressman Johnson as an expression of high regard
6161 from the Texas Senate.
