11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 360
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join the Harris County Historical Commission and the residents of
44 Houston in celebrating the dedication of an official Texas
55 Historical Marker at First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on
66 March 15, 2015; and
77 WHEREAS, This historic church was established in 1891 as a
88 place of worship for displaced residents of Shreveport who were
99 forced to move after the flood of 1890; services were originally
1010 held in the homes of congregants and then in a rented hall on
1111 McMillan Street, and the church was commonly known as the
1212 Louisiana Church; and
1313 WHEREAS, The first permanent sanctuary was erected on
1414 Providence Street in the early 1900s, and services were held at
1515 that location until the property was sold to the City of Houston
1616 in the early 1950s and the church moved to its current site on
1717 Lyons Avenue; and
1818 WHEREAS, The church's new facility was designed by John
1919 Saunders Chase Jr., the state's first licensed African American
2020 architect; construction was completed in 1955, and the name of
2121 the church was changed to First Shiloh Missionary Baptist
2222 Church; and
2323 WHEREAS, The church represents a proud history in the Fifth
2424 Ward and in the City of Houston; over the years, First Shiloh has
2525 been home to notable figures who made great contributions to the
2626 vitality of the community, and it is indeed fitting that a Texas
2727 Historical Marker be dedicated in its honor; now, therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
2929 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the history and legacy of
3030 First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and extend best wishes to
3131 the Harris County Historical Commission and the members of the
3232 church for a memorable dedication ceremony for the church's
3333 official Texas Historical Marker; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3535 honor of this special occasion.
