| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the Harris County Historical Commission and the residents of |

| 4 | 4 | | Houston in celebrating the dedication of an official Texas |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Historical Marker at First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | March 15, 2015; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, This historic church was established in 1891 as a |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | place of worship for displaced residents of Shreveport who were |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | forced to move after the flood of 1890; services were originally |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | held in the homes of congregants and then in a rented hall on |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | McMillan Street, and the church was commonly known as the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Louisiana Church; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The first permanent sanctuary was erected on |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Providence Street in the early 1900s, and services were held at |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | that location until the property was sold to the City of Houston |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | in the early 1950s and the church moved to its current site on |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Lyons Avenue; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The church's new facility was designed by John |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Saunders Chase Jr., the state's first licensed African American |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | architect; construction was completed in 1955, and the name of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | the church was changed to First Shiloh Missionary Baptist |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Church; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The church represents a proud history in the Fifth |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Ward and in the City of Houston; over the years, First Shiloh has |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | been home to notable figures who made great contributions to the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | vitality of the community, and it is indeed fitting that a Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Historical Marker be dedicated in its honor; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the history and legacy of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | First Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and extend best wishes to |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the Harris County Historical Commission and the members of the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | church for a memorable dedication ceremony for the church's |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | official Texas Historical Marker; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in |
