11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37
22 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize February
33 10 and 11, 2015, as El Paso Days at the State Capitol; and
44 WHEREAS, Located in the westernmost tip of the great State
55 of Texas, the City of El Paso combines a modern metropolis with
66 the charm born of its Spanish origins; the area was named El Paso
77 by the Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Onate for the shallow
88 place in the river where the colonists crossed on their way to
99 Santa Fe, New Mexico; and
1010 WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroads in 1881 ushered in an
1111 era of prosperity, and El Paso became a flourishing frontier
1212 community that has developed into a significant industrial,
1313 commercial, and transportation city; and
1414 WHEREAS, Today, semitrailers, trains, and airplanes
1515 transport manufactured goods through the border cities at the
1616 Pass, just as Spanish traders did in the 16th century when they
1717 guided ox-drawn carts along the Camino Real from Mexico City to
1818 Santa Fe; and
1919 WHEREAS, With a population of three-quarters of a million
2020 people, El Paso is the state's sixth-largest city and the
2121 nation's 19th-largest; the largest American city on the
2222 2,000-mile United States-Mexico border, it lies north of and
2323 across the Rio Grande from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's fifth-largest
2424 city, which has a population of over a million people; and
2525 WHEREAS, Nearby Fort Bliss has recently completed the biggest
2626 transformation in its 167-year history, with a 300 percent
2727 increase in its population since 2005 and an investment of $6
2828 billion in construction for new, top-of-the-line facilities
2929 for the incoming personnel and their families, including a new
3030 billion-dollar military hospital; this installation is at the
3131 forefront of the United States Army's Transformation plan,
3232 having transitioned from a Training and Doctrine post to a Forces
3333 Command post; and
3434 WHEREAS, El Paso is a vibrant, bilingual community, and
3535 many of its residents are fluent in Spanish; its residents enjoy
3636 a thriving fine arts community, exemplary educational
3737 institutions, and many cultural and historical resources and
3838 museums; and
3939 WHEREAS, El Paso Days at the State Capitol provide an
4040 opportunity for friends and families to honor El Paso and its
4141 rich heritage, which today is enjoyed by residents and
4242 vacationers of all ages; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
4444 Legislature, hereby recognize February 10 and 11, 2015, as El
4545 Paso Days at the State Capitol and join the citizens of this
4646 historic and vibrant region in paying tribute to this wonderful
4747 city; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
4949 memento of this special occasion.
